Whether you're into politics or not, this is the sort of documentary that everybody should be obliged to watch. Of course this is certainly not the kind of documentary for mass appeal, and I daresay the sheer weight and density of the content can overwhelm you, but this in no way detracts from the impact of its message. We are shown in no uncertain terms what the modern world of politics is REALLY all about - and sadly it has little to do with the betterment of mankind. If you sometimes (or always) feel impotent in the face of an ever expanding state, this series will amply confirm that this is no mere "feeling" - it is a frightening reality. Mr Curtis has produced a truly monumental exposé of the kind of world we have unwittingly allowed to develop in the name of "Democracy," which in fact is anything but democracy. The suspicion and general contempt with which we have come to regard our politicians is shown to be more than justified, even though most of us will have had little idea of the scale of the problem - until we have seen this series. I can think of no other documentary that comes close to this (except for the other two documentary series by Mr Curtis "The Power of Nightmares", and "The Century of Self").
This is a very weighty subject that cannot be taken lightly. Although a niggle, it's a pity that a series of this calibre has been issued in such substandard quality, both in audio and video, since it looks and sounds like a poor VHS recording. Still, I suppose we should be grateful that it has been issued at all, and certainly should not put anyone off from watching this truly outstanding documentary, which should be considered more as a public service than anything alse.
