As a MtF transperson, I've read information on transition and transgenderism from a number of internet sites and gathered useful advice from these websites. This book does an excellent job at collecting this information into an accessible and, more importantly, comforting guidebook for those who are considering transiton (whether you are MtF or FtM, although this is written for the aspiring transwoman in mind).

In particular, I appreciated the chapters on self-acceptance, coming out and hair removal. This book stresses self-acceptance and patience with loved ones (it is their transition too), not only is it suitable for transgender people but also family and friends of those who are. Anne L. Boedecker writes in a style that indicates experience and consideration for treating patients in a human-centered approach.

I do have my criticisms about the book; the first being that not all of the chapters are hyperlinked which makes navigation a bit more difficult and I personally did not think enough was mentioned on self-medication (for some of us, it seems to be our only option and that is misunderstood).

Overall, I thought this book was extraordinarily helpful (more so than all those websites and chat forums I've been on) and it was worth the money.

Pro's An easy read, very real life, practical advice on transitioning, each chapter can be read separately. Con's Some legal advice may be a bit of date but the law is always changing. In summary if your on journey to become your true then this will stop you from making some common errors which transgender people can make.

5.0 out of 5 stars Comprehensive guide for trans people 26 Dec 2013
It really helps that this book is written by a professional therapist with tons of experience dealing with transgendered people. She presents very helpful and accurate information, describing the kinds of obstacles any transitioner might face and practical tips on how to make them less "obstacle". In particular, the section describing the reactions of people is very good and will help you to identify the kinds of difficulties you might face with telling people. She covers so much of the topic that it makes a great first or general reference. Most importantly, because she's a therapist she explains things in ways that feel that they help you.
There are one or two downsides. It is quite based on her experiences of the US system, so if you aren't in the US you'll have to ignore that. You'll also need to be aware that the book covers both FtM as well as MtF - sometimes a little haphazardly, but the material mostly covers both directions.

5.0 out of 5 stars My #1 TG road map! 4 Jan 2013
By Emily Russell - Published on
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
This is perhaps the most comprehensive books I have read (and re-read! and taken notes in!) on transgender transition. It's not a narrative of one-person's experiences; it's a step-by-step handbook that a person can continue to refer to throughout his/her entire transtion. Using the metaphor of an "epic quest," Dr. Boedecker explains all facets of transition (for both MTF and FTM), from coming out to friends and family, relationships, fashion advice, all the way through to gender reassignment surgery... all with an objective point of view that does not judge or belittle the reader. She explains every step using easy to understand anecdotes from her own experiences as a therapist assisting gender dysphoric clients. Even if you are just looking to start your transition, or are in mid-transition (like me) and looking for validation for the next step in your quest, this is an incredible guidebook... a must read for the TG community and their allies!

5.0 out of 5 stars This is such a useful guide!! 20 Mar 2012

This book gives an easy to read, step by step, account of transitioning for people who are transgendered and wondering, "where, and how, do I start?" There are wonderful resources, where to go for answers, what websites are trustworthy, and how to find others going through the same transistion. There is guidance for someone in how to educate family members, co-workers, and friends about what the process involves. I am a psychotherapist specializing in this area and have found this book to be a great resource for my clients who are transitioning or thinking about transitioning.

4.0 out of 5 stars Transgender Perspective MtF 24 July 2013
By smith guyigh - Published on
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
I read this book thoroughly a few months before I began hormones, which was recently. It was very well written and offered a lot of information about the transition process, organized from beginning to end of the process so to speak, so it's great for anyone who is beginning or for those who aren't transgender but want to know more about it. It is a guidebook as the title says. The medical information was relevant and consistent with what my doctor has explained.

My only problem that it constantly affirms the notion that being transgender means stigma, meanness towards you, or that your life will be more difficult because of your decision because of society or something. So far my experience has been totally different. My family and friends have been very supportive and it has actually been really nice. I feel better than I have ever felt before. I have fun going clothes shopping with woman friends. I even went to a friend's bachelor party as my true self- around 14 guys half of whom I didn't know- and we had one of the greatest weekends ever. It's like I feel so good and if someone wants to call me name or scowl at me aren't they the one who is unhappy? They can keep that. So I wish the book talked more about how much better your life can be instead of worrying what a bunch of prudes may think about you. Just like I only hear the older generation say things about race, LGBT 'non acceptance' will die with those miserable old farts. The new generation is mostly accepting and awesome. There are plenty of people here to give you what you need. Balance between the extremes of fear and pride and you're set.

Dr. Boedecker is extremely knowledgeable, an excellent educator, and communicates especially well.
She knows her audience, and she has a wonderful writing voice. Dr. Boedecker has taken on a topic that is important, complex and controversial. She conveys her research and clinical knowledge sensitively and efficiently. Her use of the hero metaphor is unique and elegant. I recommend it most highly.

5.0 out of 5 stars Simply the best 25 April 2013
By Wieneke - Published on
This is the best book on "transgender" that I've read the last years, especialy if you are doubting about a kind of gender transition, or if you have already started one.
It is written in a very clear and direct language. I also appreciate that the author talks about every aspect of a transition, not only the SRS or only the physical topics, but it is also full of concrete tips about clothing, behavior, speech...

Thank you, Anne. You did a great job for me.
