I am currently doing a history course and we are covering slavery. The different perspectives offered in this trilogy have helped a great deal. The harshness of the traders and owners will never cease to amaze and disgust normal decent people. The excuse that ' it was acceptable then....' does not wash! It is clear from this account that racism was born from the trade to make the traders feel justified. Many have held the view that slavery grew because of racism... wrong oh so wrong. I must stop before I get too angry about the issue.

A brilliant and wonderfully constructed and eminently readable book detailing a dark and hellish period in our recent history.

As all of Walwin's books somewhat repetitive with limited analysis, but the stories of the three individuals are well selected. The slave owner was new to me and genuinely shocking.
