Product Description

Product Description

The Ken Bruce Show on Radio 2 is a national institution, much loved by millions of loyal listeners. Ken has been broadcasting for many years, although the suggestion that he was the first person to announce the retreat of Bonnie Prince Charlie's army from Dundee is untrue. Now he reveals how his dream of working in radio kept him going through the wilderness years of accountancy (not a successful career choice) and his stint at a car hire company (a surprisingly dangerous occupation in 1970s Glasgow). He finally landed a job at Radio Scotland and then switched permanently to Radio 2 in 1985, where he has been ever since. Ken writes hilariously about the technical mishaps that often threatened disaster and the wonderful, and sometimes eccentric, characters he has encountered throughout his career. He also describes the many famous people he has interviewed, his fellow DJs and life at the Beeb. Witty and warm, this book is sure to appeal to his many fans.

4.0 out of 5 stars LIFE AS KEN 30 Sep 2014
Format:Kindle Edition
Dear old Ken, it was time he had the chance to tell us his story.

He is a wonderful DJ. His lovely, gentle tones are a joy and you can hear his voice come through in this book as you read this nicely paced, self deprecating story of his life.

Ken has led a fairly steady life and whilst this book lacks any major revelations, there are some nice stories which raise a smile or a chuckle and he gives us a 'back stage pass' to life at the BBC and the frustrations of having a big old corporation as an employer.

A pleasant if slightly unremarkable read.

4.0 out of 5 stars a bit dull and guarded 28 Mar 2014

I had just finished reading the second of the books by Chris Evans (sad person that I am but they are very entertaining!) and wanted to find out a bit more about Mr Bruce as I'd been listening to him for years but realised I hardly knew anything at all- even the basics such as age, background etc.

I now know what he chose to tell which I suspect is only the half of it. He seems to have a self deprecating sense of humour on radio but this is not all that apparent in this somewhat worthy tome It tells you all the basics but does not delve too far into what he really thinks or feels so it is ultimately unsatisfying - a pity- would have been better if he had taken just a few more risks
