The foundation stone of the Troma label's trash-movie empire, The Toxic Avenger introduces the character of nerdy janitor Melvin, who suffers heaps of abuse from local bad-guys and is stuffed into a vat of toxic waste while dressed in a ballerina outfit. He emerges mutated into a Swamp Thing/Hulk-style monster hero who romps around the blighted township of Tromaville, New Jersey, offing the grotesque villains in nastily gruesome ways and mooning over his blind true love. The Troma style is unique, and perhaps predates the anything-gross-for-a-laugh approach of the Farrelly Brothers by a good 10 years, but it sometimes wavers between the good-natured gags and genuinely unpleasant plot images that somewhat spoil the tone. Entry-level filmmaking, but with surprisingly professional head-squashing effects and a degree of enthusiasm that breaks down most resistance. Several sequels have ensued, including The Toxic Avenger Part III: The Last Temptation of Toxie. -- Kim Newman

Product Description

Welcome to Tromaville, New Jersey -- a small American town, terrorized by criminals. The town's corrupt mayor sits idly by while muggers, robbers and teenage punks victimize helpless citizens. Among the residents of Tromaville is Melvin, a nerdy, emaciated janitor at the local health club. That is, until he becomes The Toxic Avenger!

A gang of thugs devise a cruel hoax that goes horribly wrong as Melvin is cast through a third story window and into a vat of hazardous toxic waste. However, an unexpected metamorphosis takes place. As the chemicals take hold of his body, Melvin turns into the Toxic Avenger, doer of good and brutal mauler of evil! The rest, as they say, is history.

The excitement is non-stop as the hero sets out to single-handedly wipe out the forces of evil that torment the people of Tromaville. THE TOXIC AVENGER is non-stop entertainment that will leave the viewers glowing from the fun.

1.0 out of 5 stars An awful UK DVD release of an all time classic 23 Dec 2004
Right, let's clear this debate up. First off, anybody wanting the uncut version of The Toxic Avenger on DVD needs to buy the official Troma DVD 'Director's Cut' version...this UK version has been hacked so badly that it's almost unwatchable. Now, and here's the odd thing, anybody wanting the full uncut version of The Toxic Avenger with all the deleted scenes restored should buy...none other than the UK video release that came out during the mid 1990's, (and there were still some available second hand on Amazon at the time I wrote this). I have absolutely no idea why, or even how they managed to slip it past the censors, but if you can do without a couple of extras, the UK VHS version is the definitive version, containing all the deleted scenes from the 'Director's Cut' in all the correct places. Although you can access these scenes separately on Troma's DVD, the fact that they're missed out of the main feature actually changes the storyline slightly as in one of them, you get to see that Julie wasn't killed at all, she was just given a severe haircut (the other scenes are just humorous).
Basically, I would advise anybody who's seriously interested in the Toxic Avenger movies (like myself) to have a copy of the UK 1990's VHS release alongside the more recent Troma DVD 'Director's Cut'. I wouldn't touch the UK DVD release with a barge pole.
The only other thing that I would point out is that if you're going to track down a UK VHS copy, make sure it's the official Troma release and not Warner's rental release from the 1980's as, despite having a cool 3D box, this was also heavily cut.
Rather bizarrely, the UK DVD released versions of Toxic Avenger Part 2 & 3 are uncut, despite Part 2 in particular containing a fair amount of gore in it's own right. Part 4 (Citizen Toxie) is only available on Troma DVD at the moment, but is easily the best of the sequels and worth seeking out.

My Toxic Avenger Blu Ray arrived today, and Im just finished watching it. I can confirm it is still the absolute perfect Friday night film!
It is uncut (first time it has been in the UK since VHS) and is is widescreen.
The transfer is miraculous, honestly I can't believe how much of an upgrade this is from the Region1 DVD.
Theres next to no grain, day time scenes are at times razor sharp, and the colours are vivid. God damn I love Blu Ray (when done right)
There are no other languages other than English, and there are no subtitles.
Also included is the 92 minute Japanese cut (full-frame, awful picture quality) and an audio commentary by Lloyd Kaufman which I have yet to listen to, but its almost certain to be fun.
The bonus features appear plentiful, but theres nothing informative. Just a few short features (such as Toxie at home, Lloyd living on the streets, a tour of Troma HQ)
What I did really like though was 'Mopboy Secrets with commentary by Mark Torgl' a few minute compilation of Melvyns scenes with Mark giving some quite good insight.

The Blu Ray comes in a really unique green Amaray case, and has reversible cover art, its nice, but I'll be sticking with the classic poster I think.

I have noticed though, since pre-orders where put up on amazon, the inclusion of the DVD in this set has been dropped. Kind of a pity as I do miss those Double Play sets.

Overall -
Toxic Avenger fan? Please feel safe in buying this, it is AMAZING to see classics like this get treated so well and its a huge improvement on every previous release I have ever owned.

Not a Toxic Avenger fan? You just haven't experienced it yet!

1.0 out of 5 stars Amazing film, terrible DVD 28 April 2010
By Craig
If you're like me and you love bad horror films, then you're almost in the right place.
The Toxic Avenger is one of my favourite films of all time, but this DVD is just awful. The film has been butchered until it's merely a suggestion of what The Toxic Avenger could be. Almost all of the violence has been removed (including a guy being hit in the face with a sandwich) and the editing is terrible.
What you need to do is buy the Troma release:The Toxic Avenger [DVD] [1985] [Region 1] [US Import] [NTSC]
Ignore the fact that it says "Region 1", as all Troma DVDs are Region Free.
Do this and you'll be able to see the full uncut version of the film, along with a load of extras that aren't on this UK release.

4.0 out of 5 stars TROMATIC TIMES FCOR TOXIE! 2 Jan 2001
By A Customer
Format:VHS Tape
With this being a trilogy box set I have reviewed each film seperatley below:
THE TOXIC AVENGER This is the first and best of the TA movies. This movie has developed over the years to be a cult classic and is one of the most outragous movies you are ever likley to see! It consists of a young boy . . .A DWEEB who is picked on by EVERYBODY. When a "joke" goes wrong the poor lad ends up in a bucket of toxic waste, soon to transform into the first super hero from new jersey, THE TOXIC AVENGER. This movie is a scream complete with a low budget, a corny story line, comedy and an excessive amount of blood and guts. MOVIE HIGHLIGHT: The restaurant scene.
THE TOXIC AVENGER PART II The second. What a great sequel! This movie features the same blood and gore as before as the first! In this film we find TOXIE (the Toxic Avenger) heading off to japan to find his long lost father. With different actors than before this is one hilarious movie unfortunatley let down by a FAR TOO LONG car chase scene at the end. MOVIE HIGHLIGHT: The big fight scene at the beginning.
THE LAST TEMPTATION OF TOXIE The third. The worst. This is not a very good movie because of it's lack of PLOT. There is no longer any crime to fight in TROMAVILLE. Toxie wants to settle down with his blind girlfreind, Claire. One fine day Toxie notices an advert in a news paper saying that a cure is available for blindness . . .GREAT FOR CLAIRE. Unfortunatley the cost for the treatment is a lot of money so Toxie gets a job. BIG MISTAKE. For what Toxie doesn't know is that he has applied to work with criminals who plan to take over Tromaville! Worth a look . .but don't expect sparks to fly. MOVIE HIGHLIGHT: The ending . . .it features a dragon. BUY THIS BOX SET. All the movies will look great in your collection! Even if youy don't like the movies you still get a FREE T-SHIRT voucher! You can't miss out on this with it being so reasonably priced and from a good company!

3.0 out of 5 stars So bad, it's good.
I first saw this film many years ago and the style shows its age. It is so bad in script, acting and infact in most aspects, it's a real 'hoot', as was intended.
