Amazon.co.uk Review

The foundation stone of the Troma label's trash-movie empire, The Toxic Avenger introduces the character of nerdy janitor Melvin, who suffers heaps of abuse from local bad-guys and is stuffed into a vat of toxic waste while dressed in a ballerina outfit. He emerges mutated into a Swamp Thing/Hulk-style monster hero who romps around the blighted township of Tromaville, New Jersey, offing the grotesque villains in nastily gruesome ways and mooning over his blind true love. The Troma style is unique, and perhaps predates the anything-gross-for-a-laugh approach of the Farrelly Brothers by a good 10 years, but it sometimes wavers between the good-natured gags and genuinely unpleasant plot images that somewhat spoil the tone. Entry-level filmmaking, but with surprisingly professional head-squashing effects and a degree of enthusiasm that breaks down most resistance. Several sequels have ensued, including The Toxic Avenger Part III: The Last Temptation of Toxie. -- Kim Newman

Buy the US version!!!! 25 July 2004
Format:DVD
Buy the American dvd version cuz the uk version is completely butchered. The UK versions of number 2 and 3 are completely uncut on dvd. The Toxic Avenger is a great film from the people at TROMA but a huge dissapointment on the UK dvd!!!

Right, let's clear this debate up. First off, anybody wanting the uncut version of The Toxic Avenger on DVD needs to buy the official Troma DVD 'Director's Cut' version...this UK version has been hacked so badly that it's almost unwatchable. Now, and here's the odd thing, anybody wanting the full uncut version of The Toxic Avenger with all the deleted scenes restored should buy...none other than the UK video release that came out during the mid 1990's, (and there were still some available second hand on Amazon at the time I wrote this). I have absolutely no idea why, or even how they managed to slip it past the censors, but if you can do without a couple of extras, the UK VHS version is the definitive version, containing all the deleted scenes from the 'Director's Cut' in all the correct places. Although you can access these scenes separately on Troma's DVD, the fact that they're missed out of the main feature actually changes the storyline slightly as in one of them, you get to see that Julie wasn't killed at all, she was just given a severe haircut (the other scenes are just humorous).

Basically, I would advise anybody who's seriously interested in the Toxic Avenger movies (like myself) to have a copy of the UK 1990's VHS release alongside the more recent Troma DVD 'Director's Cut'. I wouldn't touch the UK DVD release with a barge pole.

The only other thing that I would point out is that if you're going to track down a UK VHS copy, make sure it's the official Troma release and not Warner's rental release from the 1980's as, despite having a cool 3D box, this was also heavily cut.

Rather bizarrely, the UK DVD released versions of Toxic Avenger Part 2 & 3 are uncut, despite Part 2 in particular containing a fair amount of gore in it's own right. Part 4 (Citizen Toxie) is only available on Troma DVD at the moment, but is easily the best of the sequels and worth seeking out.
