On Christmas Eve at Tower Sky, an ultra-luxurious building complex, a White Christmas party is held to dazzle its equally high-end tenants and VIP guests. Dae-ho, the manager of the building and single father, is forced to cancel plans with his daughter Hana to work the event. His Christmas is saved when Yoon-hee, the food mall manager with a secret crush on Dae-ho, offers to babysit Hana during the party. Meanwhile, Young-ki the legendary fire chief of Yoido Station has finally promised his first holiday date night to his long suffering wife. The party is in full swing with the spectacular sight of two helicopters flying overhead just to spray snow on the partygoers and make everything perfect. When unthinkable disaster strikes, Dae-ho and Young-ki must summon all their strength and courage to save the lives of thousands but at what cost to themselves and their loved ones?

Back in the 1970's every other film was a disaster movie and in many respects most were truly disastrous ('Piranha 2', `Jaws 3', and `Earthquake' to name a few) and then there were some good ones and `The Towering Inferno' was one of them that could survive more than one viewing as well as `The Poseidon Adventure'. This then is Koreas take on the classic tower on fire scenario.

We get all the scene setting, the single dad with the crush on new girlfriend, the devoted mum with ungrateful son, the working class lottery winner and selfish VIPs. Then we get to meet the fire crew led by a tough veteran and his loyal crew and the rookie that has only joined the team that day. Add to the mix a corner cutting building firm and make it all happen on Christmas Eve and you have the potential for one helluva movie. And yes it works there is sentimentality by the bucket load, excellent CGI, over acting a Pantomime Dame would kill for and unashamed attempts to get you to blub - I ruddy loved it.

This is not high brow, but it is packed with action, thrills, misery and heart rending stories that all go to make an excellent disaster film. And at 117 minute just flies by with more cliff hangers than a cliff hanger convention - probably. If you want to just be carried along by a plot then you could do a lot worse than this; in Korean with rather good sub titles and it's got two towers not just one like the original so double the fun.

When the film opens, indeed for much of its running length, it's impossible not to think of Die Hard: the super-glossy astoundingly tall towers, the dazzling photography and the Christmas Eve setting are all reminiscent. Indeed, the action-style of the photography continues to imitate that earlier film throughout' Think Die-Hard but with fire instead of terrorists.
The story: When a party stunt at a luxurious pair of adjoined residential towers goes terribly wrong, a blaze ensues and endangers everybody. The film takes a sensible time to get the cast and their likeable quirks firmly set out for the viewer before the devastation kicks in, but once it does, it's very impressive.
Although the helicopters in the film appear to be CGI, it's not glaring, and the effects are astoundingly well done and the majority look exceptionally expensive. The characters are a bunch that you can easily root for because of some brief but nice character touches, and its nice to have a modern 'action' movie where the heroes are the fire service instead of a lone cop or the special forces.
It isn't free of clichés (the usual political and monetary swipes are in there) and one overly comical hysterical chef may have been slightly misjudged, but the film manages to balance extreme threat, innovative and dangerous set-pieces and sudden bursts of genuinely funny comedy in a nice manner. The easiest way to describe it for a Western Audience is: think what you'd get if you combined the setting of 'Die Hard' with the plot of 'The Towering Inferno' and the heroics of 'Backdraft'? That's exactly what you get here.
There is an uneven tonal shift towards the end where it becomes a LOT more emotional, which caught me by surprise (maybe it's normal in Korean movies? Does anyone know? Please comment if you do) but as a whole it's a strikingly effective film. Dramatic stuff.

This was an entertaining disaster movie. The first 30 minutes is like a sweet, silly and sentimental sitcom. Then all hell breaks loose with some fairly brutal scenes. The movie has the usual elements of a disaster movie: Tragedy, fear, heroism, bravery and self-sacrifice mixed in with a little greed, cowardism and arrogance. There is some sentimentality, but it doesn't get too much, at least for me.

If you like disaster movies, then this is a good option.

Bought this one as I am simply a fan of Asian Cinema. I must say not bad for a disaster film made in Korea and it can hold his own compared to the big Hollywood Blockbusters.
Good story, good actors, plenty of action and decent directing.
I am maybe a little biased and as I watch in the majority films within this genre, so I might miss the little differences when comparing to western films, but I really liked the film.

I didn't know what to expect. I'm not going to compare it with Towering inferno, in this film they did it their own way. Sometimes funny, sometimes sentimental, and then there is disaster and chase for life. Anyway I was very impressed with this film, geat job. It certainly stays in my collection.

Great film - Elements of Towering Inferno and 911. Well worth a watch. Great effects, a bit of a lame plot - this was an unexpected good film..
