Product Description

Product Description

The mysterious Magnet, Even Johansen – another resident of the Norwegian hit-factory town of Bergen, Norway returns this summer with The Tourniquet, his second UK full length album and the follow up to the massively acclaimed debut On Your Side.
Whilst plaudits, pundits, music lovers and human beings in general found solace and comfort in the trademark Magnet melancholica of On Your Side, The Tourniquet is not so much a record soaked in optimism, but one reborn in it. First single "Hold On" opens The Tourniquet with searing, anthemic, invigoration…"You’re not alone", croons the Magnet, re-inviting you on a warm and aspirational journey into music, just like The Beach Boys, Nilsson, The Beatles and other classic artists did so well.

5.0 out of 5 stars Stunning follow up to On Your Side 13 Aug 2005
By A Customer
Format:Audio CD
When Magnet released "On Your Side" in 2003, it was one of those underground word of mouth records, if you were in the know you felt special. It was magnificent and one of the albums of the year that year. "The Tourniquet" is the follow up, and it's even better. Opening track "Hold On" is as good as a modern day "Everybody's Talkin" Harry Nilsson. Even Johansen's subtle songwriting is something to marvel over. Jason Falkner co-produces on this new record and his touch can be heard on track 8 "Blow By Blow" with it's great Beach Boy's esque middle section reminiscent of Jellyfish's finest moments. But it's track 3 "The Pacemaker" and album closer "Jaws" that are the standouts. The string arrangement on "Jaws" reminds me of Bjork at her best and Even swoons pondering a love dilemma. "The Pacemaker" soars like Thom Yorke singing Scott Walker. The line '...I have never felt so out of place' couldn't be more apt. "The Tourniquet" is a magnificent album and worthy of your attention. It could be a bit too clever and a bit too classy for mass appeal, but if you're in the know you'll go and buy it and if you were a fan of "On Your Side" you needen't think twice, you'll love it.

5.0 out of 5 stars No words can do proper justice to this album. 25 Aug 2005
By Sonia
Format:Audio CD
With a couple of possible exceptions, I agree with everything the previous reviewer's said - this album is absolutely stunning.

As Magnet's previous album had been one of my all time favourite albums, I was really worried about buying 'The Tourniquet' because I didn't think he would have been able to produce anything to match 'On Your Side', but stupid, silly me - previous evidence has shown Magnet to be a genius so I wasted a day worrying for nothing before buying TT!

As with 'On Your Side' it takes a couple of well listened to, (this is not the type of music to have on in the background), plays before 'The Tourniquet' grabs hold, but once it does, you'll wonder how it was possible to have lived without it hearing it everyday.

In short if you liked 'On Your Side', you're pretty sure to not regret buying 'The Tourniquet', and if you never heard of Magnet but appreciate well crafted and original music with killer melodies that can take over your soul, then where have you been all this time??????

Oh and the few exceptions I mentioned at the beginning........ for me 'Believe' and 'Miss Her So' are the standouts on the album, but only marginally as in reality the whole album is one massive standout from a lot of other stuff that's around at the moment.

5.0 out of 5 stars Stunningly beautiful and varied indie album 1 Nov 2005
By anig-2
Format:Audio CD
This album is like the best of Alpha, Coldplay, Radiohead, Leaves, & Gemma Hayes all rolled into one. Everything here is beautiful - not one dud track. If you like any or all of the bands mentioned above, just buy this album - you won't regret it. Also get Magnet's earlier album On Your Side (which is just as good).
