Product Description

Product Description

With every cricket season that passes the roll-call of great players gets longer. Batsmen, bowlers, fielders, wicket-keepers, captains, characters. Every year more international cricket is played by more countries, making the task of ranking the best of them harder than it has ever been. And how do you compare a dazzling Twenty20 specialist of the modern era with a champion of the age before Test cricket officially started in 1877? Some years after the last of his highly regarded books was published, Christopher Martin-Jenkins has accepted the challenge of selecting the 100 best players of all time, one that he has called 'impossible but irresistible'. Placing them in order of precedence, he has analysed each of them, assessing their characters, the cricketing elements that made them so outstanding and the special qualities that enabled them to be pre-eminent in their time. Whether Sachin Tendulkar, Ricky Ponting, Kevin Pietersen, Brett Lee, Muttiah Muralitharan and Jacques Kallis, heroes of the contemporary game, will make a list that includes immortal cricketers such as W.G. Grace, Don Bradman and Gary Sobers, will be as fascinating as where they may be rated in the pantheon. Having written and commentated on international cricket for 40 years, Martin-Jenkins is almost uniquely qualified to act as judge and jury.

He has written a number of acclaimed books, including Men for All Seasons, An Australian Summer, and the bestselling Complete Who's Who of Test Cricketers.

As expected from Mr Martin-Jenkins - beautifully written and meticulously researched. Unexpected, but very welcome, was a photograph of each player.
He had an impossible task, and would never satisfy everyone, but he was aware of that in advance.
He avoided the pitfalls of delving into private lives in detail, and concentrated solely on ability and achievement.
A welcome addition to his previous "Complete Who's Who of test Cricketers".

Good but not Great 7 Mar 2010
Format:Hardcover
I have a huge respect for CMJ and his unbridled knowledge and love for the game

Selection of a top 100 is always going to be tricky and controversial and attempting from 1877 - perhaps the list should have been 150 to give a better justice

While CMJ has brought in the element of fair play and in his own words resisted from selection of his favourites - however the choice of selection from 1-100 in numbered order is a bit baffling

The inclusion of Abdul Qadir , Zaheer Abbas and Gordon Greenidge is welcome though the absence of Andy Robers , Martin Crowe and Anil Kumble a bit baffling

I Would have liked to see colour pictures instead of poor B&W ones of the players and also some personal anecdotes (like the book Botham;s century) from his long association with many of the players - the potted words neither are comprehensive , provide any anecdotes or memorable in any sense.

All in all well worth a glance but definitely a bit short - Geoff Armstrong and Geoff Boycott have done a better job on a challenging and debatable subject in their books - as was the earlier one produced by John Woodcock for the Times in 1998

Personally CMJ would have done better if he had described his 100 favourite players - look forward to that

Very informative book, a few startling ommissions but books like this are always a source of arguments. Highly recommended for all cricket lovers.
