Cram packed with extras, including cast biographics, photo galleries, episode synopsis and of course those cast commentaries where absolutely no one is safe. Today the series is fondly remembered as one of the most imaginative and popular children's programmes of the decade. It was recently voted into the top 100 most influential sciencefiction programmes of all time. With now infamous commentaries, the series has been brought right up to date, the actors who were household names telling us exactly what it was like to play John, Stephen, Mike, Elizabeth, Tim, Tyso, Tsui Tai and Andrew.

When coming to view this final story of the Tomorrow People, I was concerned it might either look daft, compared to todays bubblegum-headed, FX swollen, plot unladen, vapid and vacuous world of entertainment, or worse, fit straight in with it.
Thankfully, it surpassed my memories of it: the intelligent plot runs along at a cracking pace, there is a sense of heightened tension throughout, and even the spaceships are amongst the very best this series ever showcased. There are one or two plot twists that I'd forgotten, from viewing it in the '70's, that surprised me: right to the end of the story I thought that, had the series carried on, it would have taken a very different course from the previous eight series.
The only negative for me is that, in looks, one of the alien races contained within lives down to my memories of them: cheap, plastic, mincing and pathetic.
I viewed this with a sense of nostalgia and sadness, as this was the last TP series made with the original cast, though it was listening to the accompanying commentary that truly brought that feeling home. The commentary for this final story is once again chaired by Peter Vaughan-Clark (Stephen in series 1-4), with Nicholas Young, Mike Holloway and Nigel Rhodes entertainingly in attendance.
The commentary is amongst the funniest produced for these (or any other) DVDs, it's amusing right to the very last moments, and has a bittersweet tinge to it throughout as the assembled actors give their final thoughts. Sad, funny, and utterly brilliant.
I recommend this DVD as it is a fitting farewell to a very entertaining series.

So here it is - the grand finale of the whole TP saga. Originally not intended to be the last in the series, in many ways it's a fitting end a classic show. Made under the epic shadow of "Star Wars" (released the previous year), it marks the passing of an era, when good characterisation and intelligent ideas mattered more than flashy play station effects.
In attempting to take on the deep pockets of Lucas and Co in this 4 part space opera, the chronic budget limitations of the TPs are more cruely exposed than ever. (You can imagine a beancounter at ITV circa '79 saying "Go and make Star Wars. Here's 50p - and bring back the change!") Even by British Sci-Fi TV standards of the time, the effects are pathetic. However, the need to make do with whatever bits and pieces were lying around Teddington Studios does result in the creation of one of the most memorable space aliens in history - the magnificent General Vishishnu. Wearing what I believe to be a poppadom and looking like a cross between a battenburg cake and a mollusc, this demented creature whirls his single appendage around in true battery-operated bow-tie style and shrieks away like Kenneth Williams on acid. He should be on permanent display in the Tate Gallery as a modern work of art. No Hollywood-sized CGI budget could have created him.
Humourous aliens aside, the story is a fine one, with satirical swipes at the '70s arms race, then-President Jimmy Carter and the United Nations. Young Andrew even pulls off a classic rescue in best Will Robinson style. It's a great way for the TPs to sign off, with two fingers to the approaching Hollywood SF hoardes and singing (in best Flintlock style) "We've got no money and we don't care!"
So farewell John, Stephen, Liz, Mike, Andrew and the rest. You carried the SF flag proudly in '70s Britian and left us with a ton of great memories, now happily preserved on these first-rate DVDs. And no matter what the Time Lord fans say - you'll always have the best electronica TV theme of all time!
