Product Description

Product Description

The tomb of Tutankhamun (Tut.ankh.Amen), uncovered by the fifth Earl of Carnarvon and Howard Carter in November 1922, was one of the greatest archaeological finds the world has ever seen. Though superficially plundered by thieves in antiquity, the burial proper remained intact, still surrounded by a mass of funerary equipment arranged in three peripheral chambers. "The Tomb of Tut.ankh.Amen: The Burial Chamber" was originally published in 1927 as the second volume of Carter's trilogy. It records, in detail, the work of the second and third seasons at the tomb: the opening of the four protective shrines; the discovery within of Tutankhamun's quartz-sandstone sarcophagus; the extraction of the king's three anthropoid coffins (the innermost of solid gold) and the final examination of the pharoah's splendidly bejewelled mummy.

About the Author

Howard Carter (1874-1939), artist and archaeologist, was attached to various epigraphic expeditions of the Egypt Exploration Fund, later joining the Egyptian Antiquities Service as Chief Inspector of Upper Egypt and finally working as excavator for Lord Carnarvon.

Since first seeing the magnificent treasures of Tut.Ankh.Amen in the Cairo museum some years ago, and learning a little of Howard Carter, I have been trying to get hold of this work. At last it is now available and I have not been disappointed.
In this second volume Carter tells of the opening of the very heart of the tomb, the burial chamber and its never before seen contents including the mummy of the boy king himself.
Carters' preface hints at a man anxious, but not impatient, to get on with the next, perhaps most important, phase of this wonderful discovery, but irritated by the unwelcome intrusions and demands of the media and politicians. Having made his feelings known, Carter quickly puts these incidents behind so that he, and us, can concentrate on the incredible objects we are about to discover.
The account of the discovery, examination and removal of the contents of the chamber are detailed but not sterile, accessible but not patronising. The inclusion of some 88 plates at the rear of this book, although not colour, really bring to life not only the marvellous items, but also the scale of Carters task.
We cannot help but feel that dispite his vast experience and professionalism, Carter was as excited and awestruck by every tiny fragment of this discovery as any tourist. It was, however, this very professionalism that preserved these wonderful items and also brought us this unparalelled insight into the greatest archaelogical discovery of all time.
