4.0 out of 5 stars Interesting quick read 9 Dec 2013
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
I bought this book based on another mum's recommendation. Although it seems like a book written to promote the daycare it speaks about, there are many positive settings that encourage positive discipline. Overall a good quick read.

5.0 out of 5 stars Make the 2's less Terrible 21 Mar 2012
By E. Ortega - Published on Amazon.com
Raising kids isn't getting any easier. There is a slew of advice books out there all giving conflicting advice. I love this book because it's sensible, compassionate, takes kids seriously, and offers advice that just "feels" right. It was recommended to us by friends whose parenting style we liked and we have learned immensely from it. Toddlers are so much smarter than we assume and the authors of this book totally understand that. I don't write a lot of reviews, but my wife and I were talking about it the other night and decided we should spread the word on this book. If you're like us and you struggle with how to handle the constantly changing behavior of your toddler, check out this book. It covers everything from discipline to feeding to sleeping. The book advocates respecting your toddler ability to listen and grow as an independent person - I've learned how important that is and I'm a much better parent for it.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Book I MOST Recommend to Parents of Toddlers 23 Mar 2012
By Lisa Sunbury - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
If I could recommend only one book to parents (and teachers) of toddlers, it would be this one. Why? Well, for one thing, it's been in print for 25 years now- the advice offered is time tested, and it works! If you follow the guidelines offered in this book you may just find that the toddler years are more delightful than terrible. This book is just what it says it is- a practical guide to caring for and understanding your toddler. Clear, concise chapters (important for tired parents who don't have hours to read tomes), include short reflections and experiences from real families, and gorgeous photographs that underline the message of the text. The book offers insight into your child's behavior and feelings, and gives you concrete suggestions for how to approach common problems like biting, or sleep issues. You can read the whole book at once, and/or use it as a resource and flip to the sections that address your most pressing questions. It's all covered here- from temper tantrums to potty training, from sibling relationships to how to find and choose good childcare, from taking care of yourself to limit setting and talking with your toddler in ways that will encourage cooperation. The Third Edition even includes easy to prepare recipes for healthy, good tasting food, and the best play dough recipe ever! 1,2,3 The Toddler Years is encouraging, and will give you confidence in your ability to navigate and guide your child successfully through the sometimes bumpy road of the toddler years.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent Resource 16 Mar 2012
By Nicole C. - Published on Amazon.com
This is an incredible book. As a mother of a very strong-willed, intelligent 2 year old, we have relied heavily on the teachings of this book. It is amazing to me to see the difference in my daughter's response - physical, verbal, facial - when I speak in the way that this book promotes. By validating her feelings and understanding her frustrations she is able to also listen to me and we can have a very practical problem solving interaction. The teaching in this book not only empower parents in dealing with their toddler, but it empowers the toddler in a truly amazing, simple, logical way that I had never been introduced to prior to this book. It is an absolute must read for any parent - it's quick, insightful and fun.

5.0 out of 5 stars Amazing Resource for Parents of Toddlers! 22 Mar 2012
By alicia - Published on Amazon.com
This book really highlights the major developmental stages that toddlers are going through and provides examples of how parents and caregivers can successfully manage daily life with their curious, demanding and playful children. Part real life stories, part psychology primer, the book keeps things simple and concise and hits on tangible ways to better understand what your child is going through and provide context on how best to work through it. One of those books you can continually reference when you are stuck fighting battles or just to level set expectations.

5.0 out of 5 stars Quick & easy read, brilliant approach to kids 23 Feb 2012
By Lisa C. Napier - Published on Amazon.com
I love this book. As a parent of a toddler, you don't have a ton of time to read, and this book is a quick, enjoyable read -- easy to catch a chapter or three during a nap. The ideas and concepts are easy to practice, and they are effective and calm. My kids are independent, thoughtful, and communicative because of these early skills developed together as a family.

The methods are gentle, calm, respectful. I was amazed the first time (and many times after) I saw these techniques in action. I watched two 15 month old kids have a conflict over a toy; rather than interrupting the conflict or solving it for them, the care giver simply talked about what just happened, what was still occurring, helped the children empathize with each other, and then, stunningly, the children themselves voluntarily, peacefully, and happily resolved their own conflict. This book will give you techniques that will have you amazed at the hidden capabilities of very young children to share, communicate, console, and care for each other.

I enjoy giving this book as a gift to new parents, and I'd never give up my copy, though most of my other pregnancy/early parenting books have moved on.
