I have some problems with this movie. The acting is fine but the actors have been let down by a poor script which can be corny in places. This movie however is one of the first to accurately depict Titanic splitting in two as it sank, and that is a plus. The special effects are also quite good. My main problem with this film however, is Tim Curry's Simon Doonan part, yes it is fiction but his role does not make this film good for family viewing. Take out that storyline and I would actually have enjoyed the film a lot more, the story of Titanic is dramatic enough without adding this role. Some of the casting was inspired George C. Scott portraying Captain Smith was enjoyable but Marilu Henner as Molly Brown was wrong, she is just to delicate to pull off the role of the rather butch Molly Brown. In summing up I am however glad I saw this film flaws and all.

While this is no James Cameron blockbuster, or even another "Night to Remember", Robert Lieberman's "Titanic" does a decent enough job at telling the legend of this terrible tragedy. Some of the newer revelations about the sinking that have come to light since the wreck, such as the ship breaking in two before it sank and the events that conspired to bring about the collision with the iceberg are also portrayed, which should keep Titanic fans happy. Catherine Zeta-Jones brings a real presence to the film and George C. Scott adds a tragic gravitas as Captain Smith.

My main problem with this film (and the reason I am only awarding it two stars) is the plot line concerning an over-the-top crooked steward (played by a usually brilliant actor Tim Curry) and what I consider to be a gratuitous rape scene in a shower that spoils an otherwise decent and very watchable film.

Not bad 17 July 2008

I'm a huge fan of Catherine Zeta Jones, and liked her very much in this role.Personally,I thought the effects could have been much better.Of course, the finale in James Cameron's film was tremendous. Here,it was somewhat disappointing.I've read real life survivors accounts from the doomed ship, and some of it has been written into the script.Best part for me personally was Peter Gallagher literally forcing his girl into the few available lifeboats. It still shocks me today though, how so many people lost their lives on that ill fated voyage.
