The Tinner's Daughter 15 Nov 2003
Format:Paperback
The Cornish land and seascape certainly comes alive in this very absorbing book. It tells of life in 19th century South West Cornwall with Carrie, the tinner's daughter as the central character. The other characters in this evocative novel add great depth to a heartwarming but turbulent tale of the problems faced by a young girl on the lower rungs of the social ladder. Leaving her home to go into service in Penzance and having to adapt to the restrictions imposed on her and then her problematic marriage with Ernie the St Austell clay worker leave the reader sympathising with the plight of this young woman. Yet always in the back of her mind is Philippe the mysterious Frenchman she met on the clifftops who seems to appear at crucial moments in her life. The reader shares times of joy with Carrie but also plunges with her to the depths of despair. The subplots that develop along the way add even more to a novel that keeps the reader's interest all the way through. It is very well researched and written which puts it way above the average. The industrial face of Cornwall is clearly painted but with just enough detail for the reader to understand what life was like. A thoroughly good read. If you enjoy reading Catherine Cookson or Josephine Cox then you'll enjoy Rosemary Aitken's moving novel.

An excellent page-turner. Highly recommended. 10 May 1999

Format:Hardcover
Although I am not generally a reader of historical / romantic fiction, I enjoyed this book a great deal. A compulsive read, it is very difficult to put down, giving a great sense of imvolvement with the characters. The interest of the book is enhanced by the well-researched details of life in the past, and (most importantly) how these details affected ordinary people. Thoroughly recommended.
