Product Description

About the Author

Gould was a lawyer for 13 years in Matamata, New Zealand, before coming to Hong Kong in 1982 where he worked his way up to become Chief District Judge in 1993. He retired from the Judiciary in 1997 and, that same year, during a visit to Japan, he was in a bookstore where, not knowing how to read or speak Japanese, he was drawn to the puzzle which he first thought was a crossword. He was intrigued and later on he decided to take it with him to the United States and Britain. After his initial retirement, in efforts to pass time and sharpen his computer skills, Gould developed the computer program that generates Sudoku puzzles. Wayne Gould says retirement can now wait as Sudoku keeps him busier than ever. He travels between his different bases; Lantau and New Hampshire in the United States, where his wife Gaye is a professor of linguistics, and other parts of the world to which his new hobby has taken him. He has two children, daughter Sally, 29, and son, Scott, 27.

If you've rushed through previous Su Doku books and now find the easier puzzles a waste of time and paper, then The Times' Difficult Sudoku might be for you, but bear in mind that 'difficult' isn't the hardest level of Sudoku in The Times, the fiendish level is above it and there's also Killer Sudoku above that. By comparison, 'difficult' puzzles no longer provide much of challenge for experienced players. You will occasionally pause to work out a square or two, but it's not of the level where you'll have to start getting the pencil out regularly. 'Difficult' puzzles still offer a satisfying way to while away the hours (and this book will last you many hours) but if you want a genuine challenge you're better off with The Times' Killer or Fiendish collections. For the slightly less experienced who have done a handful of puzzles in newspapers and are interested in getting a book, this might be the ideal choice.

Brought as present for my father to get him through a long plane journey. He loves it so much he fills it in in pencil, rubs out and does over and over again.

Also, the book was a smaller size than expected so its quite good to carry about.

Purchased for someone else who took great pleasure in tackling them. Left me in peace to watch telly! Great books for stimulating the grey cells.

Much easier than saving pages cut out of the paper. Ideal armchair companion to pick up and put down when the mood takes.
