This atlas is basically an updated reprint of the previous edition, published 6th October 2003 (see my review of this), but with the 1:5,000,000 Alaska plate restored from the old copper plate edition due to public protest at its removal. As it is the largest and most comprehensive world atlas currently available with an index of approximately 200,000 place names, I have given it a five star rating. However, its two failings, in my opinion, are that there are no town or city plans, and that it no longer attempts to map the whole world at at least 1:5,000,000 which the old copper plate edition did. If only it left out the 'encyclopaedic information ' section at the beginning, it would have room to do both of these things. However, it is still a wonderful atlas, and tremendously good value at the discounted price offered.

This is without a doubt the best atlas available. I have other atlases from other publishers but they come nowhere near the Times Atlas for detail. This one has not only large maps showing the big places but also has the detail that you would expect from a map that covers a smaller area showing you the smallest towns.
If I want to look up a place this is the first reference I turn to.

This is a very substantial tome. It is ideal for our library where the old Times atlas was finally coming to pieces after 20 years constant use. It was a good bargain too.
I'm not sure I would suggest this for the average living room bookshelf, but it is extremely comprehensive, including my home town, so I'm happy!

A great Atlas
A great Atlas, with some very nice explanations regarding tectonics, geopolitics, climate... along - of course - great quality maps of the whole world.

The best atlas available however...
...don't understand changing the hi-def map of central Argentina and Chile for Alaska, why not mantain both? City maps would be nice, like in the concise ed. Read more
