John Bartholomew & Son Ltd. was initially situated in Edinburgh. This is where the firm pioneered landmark achievements such as the first half-inch to one mile Reduced Ordnance Survey Maps of Scotland in 1875 and the Times Survey Atlas of the World in 1922, supplementing the first Times Atlas, which was produced in 1895 with maps by the German firm Velhagen & Klasing. The Bartholomews also produced extensive mapping in support of the military during the Second World War. In 1989, John Bartholomew & Son Ltd became part of the newly formed HarperCollins, and moved to its current location near Glasgow in 1995.

The quality of the images is great, a lot of detail the layout is clear.

I like how they put a collections of world maps since 1858

1858 -> 1914 -> 1963

After 1963, the basic of the world map hasn't change much and which is the map we are using nowadays

A lot of details in the rest few hundreds page which I think the other reviews has stated clear enough

I am happy with the atlas and I think it will last a very long time.

The Times Atlas of the World's reputation precedes it as a reliable and trusted source mapping the world. This edition takes into account most recent geographical changes up to 2013 such as Queen Elizabeth land in Antarctica.

The atlas has a large index at the back, which includes places down to the size of towns. It covers continents and individual countries/areas within those continents including information such as elevations and sea depth around the coast. It also includes a historic look at how political maps have changed over the decades and centuries.

The book comes in a thick cardboard sleeve with a dull glossed paper coating. The Atlas itself fits snugly in it's sleeve and weighs a good few Kg. The print is clear, though necessarily small (type size 8) in certain places to accommodate the wealth of information given on the map.The pages are heavy and good quality and the colours are clear but not loud (that pastel shade that most non primary school maps adopt).

Scale wise the maps get down to 1:7 500 000 (South America) to 1:1 000 000 (North America) on a country scale and small capital city pop out maps of around 1:30 000 are also included.

Overall a very good atlas for an absolute bargain at the Boxing Day sales.

Purchased this Atlas as a birthday present for my father. It looks absolutely fantastic (which is always good when it is a gift!), and comes in a really attractive case. The Atlas is heavy, meaning it is best used on a table - although I expected this, given previous Atlas's, and the fact it is about 450 pages! The Atlas is full of useful information, excellent maps, and UN statistics.

Really recommend this Atlas to anyone.

I bought this through Lightning Deals and it was relatively cheap! For a big in-depth atlas with full coloured pages, I wouldn't complain a thing. It comes with a box sleeve that protects/keep the large hardcover book safe. I believe every household should own one, and very useful to show the kids/teen about the world.

I have been looking for a comprehensive atlas for some time, the one I had was a Sunday Times one but had less information and is now a bit out of date. This atlas was a very good price and is what Imwould call a coffee table book - it's very weighty and needs to be rested on something to read.

I bought this for my husband, he loves it. Loads in there to learn and to guide you. We love traveling so it gives us a great map to start with and for our children at school it is a mine of information and referencing. Highly recommend.
