4.0 out of 5 stars Look up "irreverent" in the dictionary... 8 July 2013
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
...and you'll find a great description of John Swartzwelder's brilliant comedic mind. If you fancy reading something light, relentlessly silly, and borderline insane, this is a great book to pick up.

Note: Swartzwelder was only one brain in The Simpsons's writing room, so don't expect an expanded version of the show's voice. There's no well-rounded characters (there's barely any characters at all), no emotional arcs, no keen insight into the human condition, no witty comments on today's society, it's just pure, unadulterated, silliness.

And if you're in the mood for that, this is the book for you.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fantastic 19 May 2011
By Sam
Format:Kindle Edition
This book by the man who wrote majority of the classic The Simpsons episodes is a fabulous example of John Swartzwelder's unique brand and style of comedy. The humor may be lost on some people, but frankly it is their loss. This is a must-read for anyone who considers them a fan of comedy writing. Even though I don't get a great amount of time to read, I will be sure to purchase and read the other books in the series.

I suppose I should start by saying that I thoroughly enjoyed this book, hence the five stars. You can hear the spark of seasons 3-8 Simpsons running through it. The humour in this book dances with the good simpsons, even though it's a completely different setting. I do feel it could all have been wrapped up maybe 20 pages earlier. You do get a sense that the writer began to sober up towards the end of the book. The last few chapters are a little phoned in compared to the hilarity and genius of the turn of phrase in the first half of the book. It's definitely a book I'll read again though, in the same vein of how I cycle through seasons 3-8 of the simpsons in a systematic fashion. Wholly recommended

5.0 out of 5 stars Wit & absurdity 5 Jan 2014
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
The writer of so many of the best Simpsons episodes offers a delightfully ridiculous literary trip In this, the first of his pseudo-noir Frank Burly novels. If you want serious noir, go pick up Raymond Chandler. If you want coherent narratives, try virtually anywhere else. But if you want to lose yourself in hilarious stream of consciousness adventure, this is what you need to read.

4.0 out of 5 stars Utterly insane! 11 July 2013
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
It's hard to work out whether John is a creative genius or is just completely insane.

One thing for sure though is that their is nothing else out their that comes close to making me laugh out loud, compared to this book.

If you find unexplained random ramblings, as funny as I do, then you'll love this book!
