5.0 out of 5 stars Another glorious romp but with added tears 16 April 2014
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
The first two Harry Potter novels were a delight for many reasons, not least because they conveyed a wide-eyed wonderment and awe-filled innocence about a fantastical and magical world of wizardry that stimulated imaginations both young and old. In the same way but within the setting of a time travelling community, Carl Ashmore wrote three wonderful Time Hunter books containing the same sense of wonderment and innocence that captured and captivated my own imagination.

The fourth book in this series – The Times Hunters and the Sword of Ages – carries this on while also introducing some darkness and a real sense of danger and consequence for our heroes. There is major impact for the main characters that will have fans of the books at least choking up, if not reaching for tissues to mop up their tears.

This is all more like a fading to dusk rather than a moonless night and there is still enough humour along the way to keep most of the proceedings light and irreverent in keeping with the proceeding books. And there are the usual nods and references Carl slips in to the stories that I love – in particular look out for the names of some of the Merry Men.

Some hints and threads from the previous books are expanded on and explained so that we learn more about almost every major character’ history and backstory; some are rather shocking and astonishing to say the least.

The story rattles along at pace, rarely letting up, so you are compelled to keep turning the pages not matter how late it is or the fact your lunch break is over and you have to go back to work. Sure, some of the time travel science is a bit of a stretch – would having a cyborg dinosaur, army jeeps and tanks rampaging through Medieval Britain really have no impact on the future?

5.0 out of 5 stars Sublime. 24 April 2014
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
The fourth of Carl Ashmore's superb series has a darker feel to it than the previous books.

This time our heroes are searching for the fabled Sword Of Ages hoping to find it before the hideous Drake, Kruger and The Associates.

With wit, style and grace Carl Ashmore has crafted his best book yet. The dialogue between Percy, Becky and Joe during scenes of frivolity or duress is so believable and heartfelt it's a joy to read.

I can't wait for the fifth and final book to see how it ends. Up there with Ms Rowling for a book to be enjoyed by children of all ages.

Oh, and Carl? HOW COULD YOU???!!!!
Not going to lie, I shed a little tear.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fantastic book in an amazing series! 25 May 2014
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
I was really looking forward to this book - and I wasn't disappointed. Not many books grab me to the point that I can't put them down, but all of the TH books have had me hooked. If you've read the others you'll love this one. If you haven't - YOU NEED TO!
I love the way so many historic events/periods/legends are so cleverly linked together - genius!
CAN'T WAIT FOR THE NEXT ONE!

5.0 out of 5 stars You mustn't miss this! 16 April 2014

Our friends Becky, Joe, Uncle Percy and Will are on the hunt for another Eden Relic, the Sword of Ages. Natural their arch enemy Emerson Drake and his henchman Otto Krueger are looking for it too, for the power is confers. As always with Carl Ashmore’s books, there’s plenty of action and excitement but there’s always more under the surface. The children’s characters are so wonderfully real and I can hear their conversations in my head – they ring very true! We learn a great deal more about the past of some of the characters including Joe. There are hidden depths in this story and it’s a nail-biting read.

Fans of The Time Hunters are going to snap this up and they aren’t going to be disappointed. I read it in just a couple of days and it took me from laughter to being a little choked up. You mustn’t miss this!

5.0 out of 5 stars Another delightful adventure 26 April 2014

This is old fashioned story telling at it's best and they are definitely getting better and better, the characters are developing beautifully and I love how current the children are. The mix of history, myth and present day is perfect and I can imagine that this ignites young readers interest and curiosity in subjects and historical figures they may have previously found boring. I'm not going to do a synopsis of the story as this has been done previously and you really just need to grab a cup of coffee and some biscuits and lose yourself for a few hours....perfect relaxation.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Sword of Ages, a flaming sword... 26 April 2014
By Frenchie TOP 500 REVIEWER
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
I have read all the previous books in the Time Hunters series and this one did not disappoint. As a matter of fact, it seems to me the series is getting from strength to strength. The series is also evolving as Joe and Becky are growing up and Uncle Percy is getting older. The Sword of Ages is more aggressive and faster paced. But it is also deeper and much more emotional than the others. Oh of course, I still laughed, but I also cried but I did not want the book to finish.
There is a very sad moment in The Sword of Ages but I do not believe it is as grave as we are meant to believe. I am sure the Omega effect will experience some disturbances in the future. And I hope I am not mistaken. Ahem, I repeat, I hope I am not mistaken..
I also like the 'sneaky' way Carl Ashmore give little snippets of history. And you always know when they are the real thing and when they are fantasy, for some reason. Must be the teacher in him.
I think the series would make a wonderful adventure film. Becky and Joe are superb in this book, and even though they have difficulties in dealing with a few 'untruths by omission', they come on top but hey no worries, they are definitely not too good to be true. As a matter of a fact there have been some times where I expected more of Becky in the compassion department and I just wanted to tell Joe to shut up, he can be really heavy at times!
As a parent who is quite fussy of what her children read, I want to reassure other parents that they can let their children read all the books of the Time Hunters series without wondering what they are reading. But they are not just children or teen books, they are indeed for children of all ages and this where Carl Ashmore demonstrates his magical skills in story telling.
