Life after death? 3 Sep 2009
By Bodhi Heeren TOP 500 REVIEWER
Format:DVD|Amazon Verified Purchase
For most Westerners who has grown up steeped in scientific materialism the commmon view is that death is the final stage and that conscioussness will die when the body dies. Whereas most ingenious cultures believe in a continous journey of the Soul. A view that has gathered increasing recognition amongst more openminded scientists and intellectuals thanks to the wealth of material from near-death-experiences, past-live regressions, psychedelics, holotropics etc. and the works by people like Elisabeth Kübler-Ross, Ken Ring and Stanislav GrofThe Ultimate Journey: Consciousness and the Mystery of Death

In Buddhism there has always been a strong tendency to regard reincarnation as a fact although there are divergent views as to what (or 'who') actually transmigrates.

In this fascinating movie we follow the rituals that are performed in small Tibetan villages when someone dies. All based on the reading of Bardo Thödol, the book that was translated early in the previous century and made such an impression on the great Carl Jung.

The footage on location is breathtaking while the graphic representations of the after life might be less convincing.

Leonard Cohen's relaxed and sonorous voice is perfect for the job of narrator and the film as a whole is highly professional.

Also included are small interview snippets with spiritual great Dalai Lama and Ram dass.

As somebody who has used the insights of the Bardo Thodol in my counselling work I found this work extremely useful. It's approach is graphic and practical. Some have seen to criticise this as a piece of Leonard Cohen art. They have missed the point. His gravelly tones add greatly to the gravitas. His approach is deeply respectful and ideal for such a profound presentation.

Worth watching 17 Nov 2011
Format:DVD
The first part centres around what is, I believe, genuine footage of the Bardo Thodol (Tibetan Book of the Dead) being read to a recently dead man. Mostly filmed in snowy Ladakh, this documentary is well made and very interesting. It is interspersed with some Dalai Lama footage and interviews on the subject, and also a Californian hospice where a dying man is read parts of the Bardo Thodol.

The second part, not quite as good as the first, shows what seems to be a re-enactment of a reciting of the Bardo Thodol to a dead man. This includes strange and fascinating animations, and some slightly dodgy acting. There is an enjoyable weirdness to this part of the film, all heightened by the mismatched choice of background music (80s sax and synthesisers! Whose idea was that?!).

Leonard Cohen's narration, which includes readings from the Freemante/Trungpa translation The Tibetan Book of the Dead: The Great Liberation Through Hearing in the Bardo (Shambhala Pocket Classics), adds appropriate gravitas and authenticity to the subject matter.

The whole DVD is informative and inspiring (especially I think to anyone wishing to see through their own mind-made delusions). It also gives a good glimpse into the harshness and simplicity of the Himalayan life. Would recommend it to anyone even slightly interested in the subject matter.
