Product Description

CD Description

· This newly re-mastered edition features the original 1974 album along with two bonus collaborations with MFSB. `Love Is The Message' and `TSOP (The Sound Of Philadelphia)', the classic theme from `Soul Train' which topped the American Pop & R&B charts are both featured. The Tom Moulton 1977 Disco remix of `Dirty Ol' Man' is a third bonus track, rounding out this expanded edition.

· The Three Degrees' Philadelphia International Records debut made quite an impact upon it's release in 1974. Having been R&B hit makers for years, the group were no strangers to the American Soul Chart but the pairing of the group with Philadelphia's Gamble & Huff took them to an iconic level of appreciation. The top 20 album spawned the now classic UK #1 `When Will I See You Again' and the top 20 hit `Year Of Decision'. Also featured was their Philly debut single `Dirty Ol' Man' which topped the charts in the Netherlands, staving off the threat of Demis Roussos in the process!

· This expanded reissue is a must for all Philly Soul fans.

· Also included are detailed liner notes and memorabilia.

· First 1,000 copies will be numbered and released in deluxe Super Jewel-Case.

At long last and some 36 years after it's release on vinyl, The Three Degrees' debut on the Philadelphia International label finally gets its UK release on cd. Previously only available on Japanese import, this album is a classic and features what was arguably the group's strongest line up: Sheila Ferguson,Valerie Holiday and the late Fayette Pinkney.

Although a number of the songs included here have appeared in edited forms on different 'Best Of' compilations, it's great to hear them in their entirety - no nasty fade outs to make room for more tracks.

The whole album has that lush 'Philly Soul' sound and it's fair to say that producers Gamble & Huff certainly brought out the best in this talented trio.

In addition to the hits 'Dirty Ol' Man', 'When Will I see You Again' and 'Year of Decision', highlights include fans' favourite, 'If & When' with it's swirling strings and haunting melody and the almost poppy 'I Didn't Know' featuring Valerie on lead vocals.

The bonus tracks which include MFSB anthem 'Love Is The Message' are a welcome addition.

As a longstanding Three Degree fan, here's hoping it's not too long before their other Philly albums 'Take Good Care Of Yourself' and 'Live', alongside the overlooked 'Standing Up For Love' find their way onto cd.

In the early to mid seventies Philadelphia records was a serious contender to Motown. With a roster of artists that included The O'Jays, (Backstabbers) Billy Paul, (Me and Mrs. Jones) The Intruders, (I'll Always Love My Mama, Win Place Or Show, She's A Winner) Harold Melvin and the Bluenotes,(If You Don't Know Me By Now) featuring the recently deceased Teddy Pendergrass, (Close The Door, Love TKO) and of course The Three Degrees. All producing lushly orchestrated records which became the trademark of "The Philly Sound".
The Three Degrees began life in 1963 as fifteen year old schoolgirls recording for local Philly label Swan, releasing many records, but it wasn't until they signed to Roulette records in 1970 did they release a cover of The Chantels "Maybe" which got them noticed.
After a few personnel changes, upon signing for Philadelphia Records in 1972 they embarked on the biggest phase of their career releasing their first single there "Dirty Old Man" in early 1973. Although this track gained worldwide acclaim it was only a club hit in the UK, but it's follow up "Year of Decision"made #13 on the UK charts in early 1974. Both of those tracks were lifted from their eponymous album which was released early in 1973 and was something of a slow burner in the UK. It wasn't until it's third single "When Will I See You Again" did the album begin to gather real attention, eventually reaching #12 on the UK album charts just as that single got to #1 in August 1974, itself displacing the mighty George McCrae single "Rock Your Baby" arguably the first ever disco record.
This album "The Three Degrees" is a true representation of "The Sound Of Philadelphia" from the opening track, the classic "Dirty Old Man" heard here in full length version, through "Can't You See What You're Doing To Me" "A Woman Needs A Good Man" "When Will I See You Again" and the sublime "If And When", there's not a duff or cheesy track to be heard, every track is a classic and could have been issued as singles.
I'd recommend this album to anyone, it's always been a firm favourite of mine and has been an album I've returned to time after time through the years. I'm in my fifities now, but time has not dimmed the memory of this great album. Enjoy.

Although many of the songs in this album have been included in various compilation CDs, it is good to hear them "Unedited" and in their complete form here. I love the soul music of the 60's and 70's in general, from Doo-Wop, Motown to the "disco" oriented Philly Soul. Singers from these two decades use a different vocal technique and style, not the screamy "diva" sound of Celine Dion, Whitney Houston, Maria Carey, or the so-called "Adult Contempoary" style commonly associated with Diane Baker, Michael Bolton, Luther Vandross, where the last syllable of the last word of every phrase is frequently prolonged, elaborated, and ornamented deliberately.

The orchestration of the Gamble-Huff team, which contributed to so many classic Philly signature soul hits of the 70's (If You Don't Know Me By Now, Love Train, Love Is The Message), and the complete blending vocal harmonies of the Three Degree as well as the wonderful line-up of songs, have together created one of the best soul album of the 70's.
