Product Description

Amazon.co.uk Review

Will Napoleon Bonaparte form an alliance with the Malay princes of the South China Sea? Not if Jack Aubrey can help it. Conveying a diplomatic mission to the Sultan's court, Aubrey and company must also contend with orangutans, typhoons, and a squadron of wily French envoys.

Review

'…full of the energy that comes from a writer having struck a vein… Patrick O'Brian is unquestionably the Homer of the Napoleonic wars.' James Hamilton- Paterson

'You are in for the treat of your lives. Thank God for Patrick O'Brian: his genius illuminates the literature of the English language, and lightens the lives of those who read him.' Kevin Myers, Irish Times

'In a highly competitive field it goes straight to the top. A real first-rater.' Mary Renault

'I never enjoyed a novel about the sea more. It is not only that the author describes the handling of a ship of 1800 with an accuracy that is as comprehensible as it is detailed, a remarkable feat in itself. Mr O'Brian's three chief characters are drawn with no less depth of sympathy than the vessels he describes, a rare achievement save in the greatest writers of this genre. It deserves the widest readership.' Irish Times

First Sentence
In spite of the hurry, many wives and many sweethearts had come to see the ship off, and those members of her company who were not taken up with sailing her on her difficult course close-hauled to the brisk south-east breeze, watched the white flutter of their handkerchiefs far across the water until Black Point hid them entirely, shut them right out. Read the first page

Thirteen gun salute 9 Sep 2011
Format:Paperback
You are never disapointed with Patrick O'Brian books. So far this book is as good as all the other books in the series.
Best points of his books are: Technical accuracy, sound knowledge of sea matters from that period and a good tale.
The down side is,at times the book he appears to ramble on with small bits of the story for too long, then all of a sudden the book races away and you can't put it down. Overall this is a good book to entertain you.

Format:Paperback
I am totally hooked on Patrick O'Brian's Aubrey/Maturin books and have just finished The Thirteen Gun salute, no 13 in the series. One of the best so far and a thoroughly good read. O'Brian's knowledge and understanding of the way of life on a man of war is quite amazing. I recommend this book to anyone with an interest in the sea and I am looking forward to starting on the next one.
