Read the book 'The Third Class Genie' and you will not only find a good story and an entertaining read, but you will also learn about other features of life in modern Britain such as cruelty, hardship and racism.

Alec is a boy who is always in trouble so it seems lucky when he finds a Third Class Genie who is probably 1,000 years old. Alec tries to find a way to help himself and his family by using the Genie but things keep going wrong. Worse things happen when the Genie, whose nickname is Abu, becomes a real person. This makes Alec panic, but with the help of his own family and some Afro-Caribbean neighbours, they help Abu back into his beer can.

The struggle to overcome all these difficulties draws the community together and enables them to tackle other problems as well. In particular it means that the residents living on Boner's street, threatened with relocation, are able to fight to keep their homes. .

The two main characters are Alec who is a skinny boy who keeps a daily record of his disasters and triumphs and Abu who is a Muslim Genie living in a beer can.

I really liked this book because the Author makes it seem so realistic. The book has a clever mixture of magic, fantasy and reality. The author draws these elements together well and I enjoyed it as much as the series by Diana Wyne-Jones.
