A crackling detective story!

Product Description

A rather silly detective story in the spirit of Jasper Fforde.

Harry Pigg, the only surviving brother from the Big Bad Wolf attacks, has set up business as a private detective in Grimmtown, only things aren't going too well. Down on his luck, with bills to pay and no clients in sight the outlook is poor. But then in walks local businessman Aladdin who needs someone to help him track down an old lamp.

What follows is a case of nursery rhyme-noir. Funny, thrilling and always entertaining, Harry Pigg is an old breed of hero for a new generation. It's as if Humphrey Bogart or James Cagney had walked into the middle of a bedtime story.

A comedy caper for all ages. The first in a major new series.

Well thought out, clever twists, very polished, I would highly recommend this book both to teens and adults a like, there's something in here for everyone. The writing is clever, witty and fresh, you can see a lot of work went into this book. Laugh out loud funny. From the first paragrahy you just know you're in for a fun, fun ride. Harry's the man (well the pig!). I'm usually a very slow reader but I couldn't put this down until the mystery was solved.

My nieces and newphews will be receiving early xmas presents of it in the post very soon.

This is the businss, I can't wait for his next case!

Ever wondered what happened to the little pig (otherwise known as Harry Pigg) who was wise enough to build his house out of bricks? Well, after boiling the Big Bad Wolf down for soup, Harry became something of a fairytale legend and decided to take advantage of his fame and set up as a detective.

But business begins to dry up and Harry finds he has too much time on his trotters and not enough cash in his piggy bank. So when he's approached by a certain Mr Aladdin, who is missing a very special lamp, he has no choice but to take the case on. Naturally, this embroils Harry in a lot of trouble. There's avaricious witches, thuggish orcs and a sometimes overenthusiastic Jack Horner to contend with, along with a host of other complications.

The Third Pig Detective Agency is a great book, totally entertaining and madcap. Harry Pigg is a fabulous character, a kind of porcine Philip Marlowe let loose in a fractured fairytale universe. I have no doubt he is going to garner a cult following.

As well as being a great read, I have to mention the book design too (cover and inside.) It's beautiful, well thought out and witty.

Pigg is the man! 26 Jun 2009
Format:Hardcover
I thoroughly enjoyed this book from the fabulous cover design, through the cool touches to the pages , right the way until the end.
Harry Pigg is up to his trotters in a case, and there's a plethora of familiar Brothers Grimm/Fairytale characters to aid, annoy, antagonise and attack our porcine hero. Comparisons to Phillip Marlowe in the previous review are spot on.
A witty tale told with so much dedication to every word. Bob Burke is going to be very popular in years to come if he keeps this up. A touch of Raymond Chandler, a sprinkle of Eoin Colfer, a dash of Columbo - riveting stuff and you'll have a blast identifying the familiar faces and names in Grimmtown.
Roll on the next Harry Pigg case....

A promising story but not well written
A good idea for a story let down by a poor writing style. Too often the writer over explains situations which makes its a little painful and annoying for the reader. Read more

Where was the editor
This book needed a very thorough editing before being published, but obviously Harper Collins don't mind putting out very sloppy writing on imprints like The Friday Club. Read more
