Book Description

1 Feb 2007 The Bill Slider Mysteries

SHALLOW GRAVE: The Old Rectory is the kind of house Detective Inspector Bill Slider would give anything to own. But the dead body of Jennifer Andrews, found in a hole on the terrace, rather spoils the view. It looks like a straightforward case: Jennifer was a congenital flirt, and the hole was dug by her builder husband Eddie, who was violent and jealous. But questions remain unanswered. Why was Jennifer's body so unmarked? And how did she reach her shallow grave unnoticed?

BLOOD SINISTER: Award-winning ex-Guardian hack Phoebe Agnew had a name for championing the underdog - and for attacking the police in print. When her trussed and strangled body is found in her chaotic flat, Detective Inspector Slider must demonstrate the impartiality of the law and find her killer. Unidentified fingerprints, a missing ligature, alibis offered when none is required - Slider is on a race against time to untangle the web of lies and hidden relationships.

More About the Author

Cynthia Harrod-Eagles was born in Shepherd's Bush in London. She was educated at Burlington School, a girls' charity school founded in 1699, and at the University of Edinburgh and University College London, where she studied English, history and philosophy. She wrote her first novel while at university and in 1972 won the Young Writers' Award with THE WAITING GAME.

Afterwards she had a variety of jobs in the commercial world, while writing during the evenings and weekends. The birth of the MORLAND DYNASTY series enabled her to become a full-time writer in 1979. The series was originally intended to comprise twelve volumes, but it has proved so popular that it has now been extended to thirty-four.

In 1993 she won the RNA Novel of the Year Award with EMILY, the third volume of her Kirov Saga, a trilogy set in nineteenth century Russia, and she also writes the internationally acclaimed BILL SLIDER MYSTERIES.

Cynthia Harrod-Eagles still lives in London, has a husband and three children, and apart from writing her passions are music (she plays in several amateur orchestras) horses, wine, architecture and the English countryside.

5.0 out of 5 stars Balancing act 20 Sep 2010
Format:Paperback
I feel compelled to write a review to counter the only other one available, which gives this book one star on the grounds that it has not arrived and therefore cannot be reviewed, which is, frankly, a less than helpful comment.

Cynthia Harrod-Eagles writes delightful, intelligent, and slyly funny mysteries. The plots are often devilishly clever. Bill Slider is one of the most memorable fictional policemen out there, a completely believable person with a completely believeable life outside "the Job" but a whole-hearted dedication to the pursuit of justice. The minor characters are simply a joy. Harrod-Eagles is a 5-star author and should not be punished because of an undelivered book.

5.0 out of 5 stars Another great series entry 12 Sep 2009

I adore these books: the interesting characters, none of whom is unbelievably perfect; the nicely complex plots; and the terrific puns. They are among the mystery series I keep so I can have the pleasure of rereading them. I just wish there were more of them, but there is a limit to how much one author can write if she takes the trouble to create a real world.
