Your kind review 2 Sep 2011
Format:Audio CD
Many thanks Zargb5 for the wonderful review!
I chose to pick up on a couple of your points however, just for clarity. Hope you'll forgive me.

Firstly, these are in no way "transcriptions". Throughout the album I tried to balance out renditions that stayed relatively true to the original with those that simply used the melody (or a portion of it) as a springboard for new composition of my own... inspired by the original melody.

Additionally, there are no segments of composition (or "inner working") by Allan in these tracks that somehow weren't a part of the Allan album original versions, so the expansions that are apparent are all my own "supplementary" compositional developments, again, inspired by where and how I wanted to go with these treatments.

In summary, the only thing that remains true to Allan's definitive originals are the song melodies, which (occasionally) I'd transcribe for accuracy. The harmony was completely reformed and (as apparent) often the contexts completely re-imagined.

Lastly, it's not actually true I never played keyboards on an Allan Holdsworth release or concert. From the initial IOU period I was playing a piano interlude always as a part of our concerts, and indeed on that first IOU album I played a piano solo on the song Temporary Fault (followed by one from Allan on violin.) I also played the first (synth) solo on the title track of the "Wardencliffe Tower" record, and also played keyboards on (my own composition) "City Nights" from the album secrets (along with AH, Jimmy Johnson and Vinnie Colaiuta) even though on the initial album's release my name was not in fact quoted as having played.

Thanks again though, for the very flattering appraisal and I am delighted you enjoyed it.

Sincerely yours,

Gary Husband

Gary Husband is not only a great drummer but also has a huge talent as a piano/keyboards player.

To fans of the British jazz scene this should not be news - but to fans who have heard him on various session recordings it may be.

Husband and Allan Holdsworth go back a long way and Husband has appeared on many Holdsworth solo albums and tours over the years. The man therefore has definite credentials and an intimate inside view and interest in the inner workings and construction of the music.

Strangely Husband has never played keyboards on an Holdsworth tour or release. (please read COMMENTS below) It would be very enlightening to hear the interaction between them. Husband is currently involved in John Mclaughlin's current projects/tours both as keyboardist and percussionist and also the newer Jack Bruce/Robin Trower albums and tours.

The music on the 'things you see' is quite sublime. The usual jazz/rock heavy sounding compositions of Holdsworth do transcribe very effectively to solo piano. The compositions are strong and Husband brings out the inner beauty and sophistication of the songs while they take on new insights, meanings and emotions through Husbands musical sensibilities. These are not always straightforward versions, which is a good thing as Husband's influence and input on the songs shows what gems they are. One comes away not only appreciating even more the compositional abilities of Holdsworth but the wonderful music making evident on this album. It is a tribute in the real meaning of the word, evocative, subtle, emotional and playful.

Holdsworth genuinely loved the album as did Mclaughlin and it picked up a plaudit as one of the best jazz recordings of the year by BBC radio 3 in their jazz review of the year.

Highly recommended.

Gary's Loving Tribute is a Masterpiece 8 Jun 2002
By Johanna McKenna - Published on Amazon.com
Gary and Allan's twenty-plus year musical relationship is the basis for this very loving tribute to his "musical brother." Gary takes Allan's beautifully complex compositions in a completely unexpected direction, such as the very witty thirty-second take on the Atavachron classic "Looking Glass," or his unique version of the recent trio tune "The Sixteen Men of Tain." A must for Holdsworth collectors and fans of truly great piano. Husband is a virtuoso in his own right, and what drummer Billy Cobham rightfully calls "one of the best-kept secrets in music."

Get it before it goes out of print 22 Jan 2004
By Dan A. Bobrowski - Published on Amazon.com
In a recent post at the Allan Holdsworth web site, Gary said the record company is pulling the plug on this emotional tribute to Allan's music. I was touched by the mood this recording brought out in me, an interpretation of the music of my favorite composer/artist/musician. Not only6 does Gary play the keyboard, hhe plays the piano itself with percussive acuteness, accenuating the passion of the tunes. Some whispered vocals in "The Things You See." Gary proves himself to be a true multi-instrumentalist and artist. Buy soon, before it's gone.
