Review

Pam Jenoff weaves an intriguing and intelligent story with a delicacy that is captivating. The triangular love stories are threaded together with skill and passion, while at the heart of it ticks the clock that holds the answers. Jenoff evokes in touching detail a significant point in twentieth-century history and makes it resonate for readers today Kate Furnivall, author of THE RUSSIAN CONCUBINE

Product Description

Roger Dykmans, a university student, is living with his brother Hans, an international emissary who's secretly working against the Nazis. As time goes by, Roger finds himself increasingly drawn to Magda, Hans' Jewish wife. But their secret world is turned upside down when Magda and her young daughter, Anna, are arrested by the Nazis. The Gestapo make a deal with Roger: if he hands over information about Hans' operations, they'll set Magda and Anna free. Suddenly, Roger is faced with an impossible decision: should he betray his brother to save the woman they both love? Spanning decades and continents, The Things We Cherished explores the strength of true love under the worst of circumstances.

By Gareth Wilson - Falcata Times Blog TOP 500 REVIEWER VINE™ VOICE
Format:Paperback
There are some books that you can write a review on straight after finishing, and others that have to take a while to digest and dig your way through your thoughts so that you know what the book did for you mentally as well as emotionally. The later being the case with this title by Pam Jenoff where the writing takes you on a tale of love through critical times throughout the first part of the twentieth century and the harrowing choices that are made that people have to live with.

It's cleverly written and with the key part coming to the reader in the first person point of view it makes for gripping reading as we get to know the old man in the court case as a young person. It has dark moments, the odd piece of light and of course the material is sensitively handled which makes this a book that is not just a story of romance but of survival against a dark period in our own worlds living memory history. It's also has solid prose and the author is one who believes at the core of any story are the people rather than having to overly complicate the plot with intricate details almost as if to hide things.

Finally add to this, a wonderfully warm authorly voice and the story really does work its way into your subconscious. Crackingly told and of course a read that will stay with you for quite some time.

By Lovely Treez TOP 500 REVIEWER
Format:Paperback
Pam Jenoff's latest novel is a well plotted, dual-time frame story. In the contemporary narrative, two American attorneys, Charlotte Gold and Jack Harrington, are brought together to work on the defence of a man accused of war crimes during WWII. The accused, Roger Dykmans, is reluctant to aid them in his defence, seeming resigned to whatever fate holds for him. The only clue is a handcrafted anniversary clock which might hold the key to why he allegedly betrayed his brother Hans to the Nazis.

In the engaging historical narrative, we are fed tantalising nuggets of information which eventually come together to explain Roger's actions. It's a love story with Roger falling for Magda, his sister-in-law in what will be a doomed romance.

Romance also features in the modern narrative, with Charlotte and Jack gradually becoming closer despite the emotional baggage of previous relationships. I found their story less gripping than that of Roger and Magda who had much more to lose but then I have a personal preference for historical fiction.

This is a very touching, readable story with the focus on love and loyalty rather than the brutality of war. It's about how we tend to cling to the past, to our memories - both good and bad.

An emotional novel 13 Nov 2011
By DizzyC
Format:Paperback
Roger's story is pieced together in present day by Charlotte and Jack who are working together to represent Roger at his trial. Roger is not being co-operative, but why?
The historical story is sometimes romantic, sometimes harrowing. The author has not favoured either of these emotions making for a very emotional read. The romance flowed at times but then the scenes of most bleak times brought me back to reality that these people were trying to survive.

Pam Jenoff is very knowledgeable in Law, History and Government. This comes across in her fabulous writing.
I did have a little difficulty keeping the pace in this novel and I believe this is down to my lack of knowledge of the subject matter. Maybe I need to try to read this again another time.
I do love Pam's style of writing and will be seeking out her other novels.
