I loved this book, it is my favourite Shan novel to date. It is a big departure from the traditional Darren Shan novels in that it is a fantasy adventure that does not conform to the usual bloody tales that we are used too. Essentially it is a coming of age story of Jebel Rum who goes on a long quest to become the thin executioner. It is probably a slower pace than his other books but the story is so engaging and the descriptions vivid that I found myself totally engaged. The inspiration for the setting of the books was Jordan and the Middle East so particularly loved the nasty anti-hero characters of Master Bush and Master Blair - meddling in business that was not theirs to meddle with!!
If you are unsure of whether this book is for you I urge you to give it a go - you will not be disappointed. It illustrates once again what a versatile author Darren Shan that he can so brilliantly turn his hand to fantasy, crime (in his adult books) and horror with equal measure!

I bought this book for my 13 year old son. Darren Shan is his favourite author and so he read this book with excitement and thoroughly enjoyed the story. As I don't read this author I can only say that if my son enjoyed it, then it must be as good as Darren's other books.

This is a stand alone fantasy novel and not the beginning of a new vampire series. If you are looking for another horror fest you may be disappointed as this is more of an adventure story set in a different world, involving slavery and religious ritual. There is however (according to my son) "lots of blood and gore" and the story is fast paced and a page turner. Overall he didn't enjoy it as much as Darren Shan's other books but this was mainly to do with his pre-conceived ideas about what sort of book this would be and him not being a particular fan of fantasy. However, he wolfed it down in a couple of sittings so I think as long as you are prepared for this to be a different Darren Shan read to the usual you ought to be perfectly satisfied.
