Review

[Gen] is the freshest and funniest hero to tumble through a fantasy novel for many years.
Independent on Sunday

“From the believable characters to the well-realized setting, this fantasy offers a refreshing change of pace for readers who enjoy adventure stories with a touch of magic. “
Booklist

“This is an uplifting book, a literary journey that enriches both its characters and readers before it is over. “
Kirkus Reviews

“A tantalizing, suspenseful, exceptionally clever novel … The author's characterization of Gen is simply superb: she lets the reader know so much about him – his sense of humor, his egotism, his loyalty, his forthrightness, his tendency to sulk – and yet manages to hide the most essential information. Which is not to say that either Gen or Turner deceives the reader: both tell part of the truth at all times. And so, unlike many other novels of surprise, which don't bear up to a second reading, Thief is even more fun to reread – you can see all the clues to Gen's identity and mission, and delight in the author's ingenuity.”
Horn Book

The characters, and the fluctuating relationships between them, are extremely well-drawn, with tension building as they approach the fulfillment of the mission. The plot twists and turns dramatically and humorously. We really care about what happens, and the final resolution is as satisfactory as it is unexpected. I read most of this in one evening, and found it absolutely gripping…The Thief is a really good read, with a touch of myth and magic, and Megan Whalen Turner is an author to watch. Achuka

Product Description

Newbery Medal winning fantasy, set in a world not unlike Ancient Greece, complete with interfering Gods and Goddesses.

The King’s magus believes he knows the site of an ancient treasure – Hamiathe’s Gift. To attain it, he needs a skillful thief and he selects Gen from the King’s prison. The magus is only interested in the thief’s abilities; what Gen is interested in is anyone’s guess.

A likeable rogue, Gen endures the difficult trek with much complaining and little grace, but shows his mettle when he steals the Gift twice and risks his life for his companions.

The Thief is an exciting and compelling 'road-movie' story, with a cracking twist at the end which surprises both the magus and Gen's travelling companions – not to mention the reader!!

Unforgettable 26 Jun 2005
By Bee
Format:Paperback
The story revolves around Gen - a brash, cocky thief who instantly captures the readers attention. His thoughts, actions, and relationships with the other characters are what really push this book, and make it so unique.

After being locked away in prison in Sounis, Gen is offered a way out by the King's Magus. Gen must steal a fabled jewel, to provoke the Queen of Eddis, a neighbouring country, into marrying the King of Sounis. Royal Politics brush the surface of the adventure - as Gen travels with the magus, the naive son of a duke, a destitute nobleman, and an experienced soldier towards their destination, and the jewel. But not all is as it seems, for more than one of the characters.

The unabridged audio version read by Jeff Woodman would be great listening for the whole family on those vacation drives. Four companions thrown together by strange circumstances set out on an adventure to find a legendary stone. Their relationship develops through their mutual experiences. The story is exciting with a surprising finish. Jeff Woodman is the premier narrator of books about young people and he does justice to Megan Turner's book. I hope we see more books from Ms. Turner soon.

From the moment you read the first sentence you're completely hooked. Gen is a thief, stuck in the king's dungeon, filthy and starving. A magus lets him out on condition Gen steals a fabled jewel Hamiathes's Gift, without which the Queen of another country will not marry the King of Sounis. So begins a dangerous an uncomfortable journey. With them travel two young men, one a Duke's son, the other an impoverished an bullying nobleman, plus a soldier. WHat makes it better than the standard quest story is the wit and rudeness of Gen, and the growing relationships forged between him and his companions. Exciting, fast-paced and well-written, it makes you await the sequel with eagerness.

an okay start to a wonderful series
Written in first person, from Gen's point of view, this was one of those books where I would have liked to read the POV of other characters or just have a third person narrative. Read more

Thank you, Thief :)
Gen was not 'just' a petty thief! He was an excellent one, with attitude, pride, wit and of course, a 'big' secret of his own. Read more
