Book Description

4 Nov 2010

'It's the kind of f***-up that would normally have Malcolm Tucker, Number 10's Communications Director, the master of spin and the "Matrix" spitting blood ... No, the guilty party in this instance is none other than Tucker himself. The man who likes to keep an iron grip on every news item in the media and every policy announcement that comes out of the government, has only gone and LEFT A CONFIDENTIAL FILE ON A TRAIN: The DoSAC Files.'

Based around the idea that King of Spin Malcolm Tucker has lost a confidential and highly-damaging file on a train, this book is a collection of highly sensitive documents: personnel files, policy drafts, letters and emails, transcripts of phone calls, election campaign documents and top secret papers on the government's media strategy for wars and recessions. There are also more personal documents such as the early drafts of Tucker's diary, in no legal condition for publication. It's explosive stuff, which could end careers on both sides, including Tucker's own...

From the team behind the award-winning and phenomenally successful The Thick Of It, and the Oscar-nominated In The Loop, comes the official tie-in book, The DoSAC Files. Written by the show's creator Armando Iannucci along with his co-writers Jesse Armstrong, Tony Roche, Simon Blackwell and swearing consultant Ian Martin, The DoSAC Files looks set to be the political satire event of the year.

Book Description

From the writers behind The Thick of It and In the Loop comes Malcolm Tucker's lost secret government files...

About the Author

Armando Iannucci is one of the most successful comedy writers and producers working today. In 1991 he received widespread acclaim for the satirical Radio 4 programme On The Hour, which he reinvented with co-writer Chris Morris as the multiple award-winning The Day Today (BBC2). Working with Steve Coogan, Peter Baynham and Patrick Marber, he also oversaw the creation and development of comedy character Alan Partridge, and turned performer himself with satirical show The Saturday Night Armistice. He has written a number of books including Facts and Fancies and The Audacity of Hype.

Jesse Armstrong is the co-creator and co-writer of the award-winning Channel 4 comedy Peep Show. He has also written for Channel 4 sketch show Smack the Pony and the children's series My Parents Are Aliens (CITV).?Before becoming a full-time writer in 1997, he worked for a Labour MP and a member of the shadow Home Affairs team.

Simon Blackwell is currently writing a second series of The Old Guys for BBC1, and writes episodes of Peep Show (Channel 4). He also created and penned the Spitfire pilot sketches on The Armstrong and Miller Show (BBC1). Formerly a chief writer on Have I Got News For You, Simon's other credits include Alistair McGowan's Big Impression (BBC2), The Kumars at No. 42, Monkey Trousers, and the BAFTA-winning The Sketch Show, which re-emerged on US television starring Kelsey Grammar.

Ian Martin joined The Thick Of It as 'swearing consultant' on Series 1 and is now part of the writing team. He wrote for the Oscar-nominated film In the Loop and was a major contributor to The Thick of It: The Missing DoSAC Files, published by Faber in November 2010. Ian has written for radio and newspapers. He edits the satirical website www.martian.fm and produces weekly columns for the Architects' Journal and the Times Educational Supplement. He lives in Lancaster.

Tony Roche is a TV and radio comedy writer. He created the Radio 4 series World of Pub and later adapted it for BBC2. His other credits include The All New Harry Hill Show (ITV1), Alistair McGowan's Big Impression (BBC2), Smith & Jones (BBC1) and Dead Ringers (Radio 4). He also wrote and directed the award-winning short film How to Tell When a Relationship is Over.

2.0 out of 5 stars Christmas Tie-in Annual. 27 Oct 2010
By Graham Chapman TOP 1000 REVIEWER
Format:Paperback|Amazon Verified Purchase
You know those 'comedy tie-in' books your parents bought you for Christmas when you were 14? Monty Python Contractual Obligation book, the Goodies annual etc? This is one of those. A nice Christmas bonus for Iannucci (OBE!) and his co-writers, but is it any good for the reader?

Not really. Take the story, the drama and the actors out of 'The Thick Of It' (one of the very best UK comedies) and what is left is not that funny. Basically, this is a book that looks like it has been written by a committee of Comedy Annual Factory Workers using bits of script out-takes and stuff pulled out of the 'Lame Ideas?' box. Example: there is a 3 page dossier called 'Peter Mannion - Attack Points', then a list of illustrated ideas in 'Comedy Annual Format' including 'has floppy hair', 'takes viagra', 'looks like a mass murderer.' Ha Ha! The Mannion character was funny, charming, cynical and, in some ways, quite a decent old cove in the series, but now he has been transported to Comedy Annual Land.

I am not saying you won't find a chuckle or two in here. I quite like the description of Adam Boulton as a 'male Sandi Toksvig with a glandular complaint', but even that is pretty mild stuff. Adam alone, a bigoted, evil toad, deserves a far more savage and considered attack, doesn't he? His bloated, blotchy appearance is not the worst thing about him.

In short, this is a hugely disappointing book that will be gracing charity shops in bulk shortly after Christmas, I suspect. By that time, though, Iannucci and his cohorts will have taken our money as unashamedly as the Coalition government.

(Incidentally, potential buyers looking at reviews on this book should look out for blatant 'publisher's reviews,' written by newly created Amazon accounts. You'll spot them by the way they are written - the kind of publisher's hype you only get in blurbs: 'achingly funny' 'a huge credit to the writers', it made me laugh out loud' etc.)

'Ever had the feeling you've been cheated?' (J.Rotten).

5.0 out of 5 stars Of course it is good... 27 Nov 2010
Format:Paperback
I dont work for a publisher, but I am a fan of the series. To be honest, if you werent a fan of the series then I'm not sure you would really "get" this anyway. Book is hilarious and exactly what I hoped for - a continuation of one of the funniest comedies I have ever had the pleasure of seeing. Very, very funny. Enjoy...

3.0 out of 5 stars I like having it
But it's not as funny as the show. The bonus is, for me, shallow as I am, there are pictures of Peter Capaldi, and that for me is the REAL selling point. Yum.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great tie-in
This book is great fun for fans of The Thick of It. The only downside is that it's a bit short and most of the material can be found on the app.

Although I bought the iPhone App for about $6, I though I'd get the book too, which doesn't have anything particularly new, but it's great to have a solid copy, with better... Read more

1.0 out of 5 stars Disagreable
I don't watch television but I suspect this is a book of a show. Maybe if I knew the show, this book would have more context and would have meant more to me. Read more

I loved this. I think the reader needs to be pretty familiar with the characters to appreciate it, but for someone who is, I think they would love it. Read more

2.0 out of 5 stars For true devotees only
A bit disappointing to be honest, this doesn't add to the success of the TV series, and is short of good material.
