More About the Author

I grew up in the San Fernando Valley of Los Angeles, California. My father, writer and aeronautical engineer Carl Onspaugh, was a fan of science fiction, and his bookcase contained lots of science fiction anthologies... Thanks to them I visited many strange and wonderful places, courtesy of editors like Judith Merril and Groff Conklin. Besides my father, my early influences include Ray Bradbury, Robert Sheckley, Robert Bloch and Eric Frank Russell. Later, I would discover Stephen King, Robert McCammon and Lee Child. I am a proud member of the Horror Writers Association, and I live in Cambria, California with my wonderful and talented wife, writer Tobey Crockett PhD, and three tricksters in the form of cats (William Yamantaka Ginsberg, Orion Zephyr O'Brien and Callisto Tigerlily of Themyscira).

4.0 out of 5 stars Good start, don't let us down. 26 Nov 2013
By Robert Strieby - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
This is a solidly written book with decent character development of the main protagonists. The ancillary characters, not so much, but as it will be a continuing series I look for them to be fleshed out as the story progresses. The story itself has an interesting twist on the symptoms of undeath which makes dealing with the undead much different than in a straight "romeroesque" zombie novel. The characters make mistakes, but not the same ones repeatedly, and seem to learn from them. Some of the ancillary characters reminded me of people who we all know; no matter what someone else experiences they have to find out for themselves. The editing is pretty good, no major grammar errors that take you out of the story, but a few minor ones. Only one major continuity error, when a character is identified as another who was killed much earlier, then identified correctly, then wrongly again. The only thing that didn't thrill me was the cliffhanger ending. I realize that this will be a series, but this is a full length novel not a 100 page serial, and the ending provides exactly zero resolution to any of the plotlines. I read about 5-10 books a month, and long delays in releasing sequels to this type of ending either require me to go back and refresh my memory with the previous work or the author to devote a chapter to summarizing the last book, I don't like either. In the end I liked this book, I recommend this book, and I will read the next book.

3.0 out of 5 stars Not my kind of zombies 17 Dec 2013
By Peggy B - Published on Amazon.com

Not my kind of zombies. Outer space bugs, exploding brains - not for me. And I am so tired of zombie stories that feature a crazed cult. I'm also tired of the unredeemable bad guy who is so stupid that the things he does couldn't even make sense to him, much less to the reader. The end left you hanging, so I assume a sequel is on the way, but I can honestly say I don't really care what happens to the characters. Just not for me.

5.0 out of 5 stars Old School Meets New School 29 Dec 2013
By Samuel Grathler - Published on Amazon.com

Being in my mid-50's it took a few pages to adjust to the college frat thinking style, but the author brought the characters to life (and death) with a good story line and a different take on the creation of zombies with a virus brought back from Venus. Very good read, fast paced, i didn't want to put it down and i have averaged three books a week for a loooong time. The only dissapointment.....there has been no sequel written yet! Great job Mark! And hurry up with your next book!!!!

This is a gory zombie book. It is well put together, but is only for those who want some violence with their zombies.

1.0 out of 5 stars Not a very good effort. 18 Dec 2013
By Stephen A. Barnes - Published on Amazon.com

I began to read the Kindle Edition which I figured was a good bargain for only .99 cents. Fortunately, I was able to return the book for a refund. The author started off with an entertaining if stale plot line. The usual zombie/dystopia fiction with a slight sci-fi twist. However, much of the dialogue of the characters comes across as entirely too generic and almost comically stereotypical. However, as they say, the devil is in the details. The author eventually seems to forget several key elements of his own story. Firstly, locations are jumbled, the protagonist's sister is in New York when the zombie apocalypse occurs, two paragraphs later she somehow ends up in London. The deal breaker, for me at least, was the reappearance of one of the minor characters just a few pages after he had been graphically devoured by zombies. One minute he's dead in a supermarket, the next he's bounding into a room full of people seemingly without any of the ill effects which come with being devoured by zombies. Sadly, this book isn't even worth the .99 cents.
