Product Description

Review

"This book deals with the uses and abuses of the therapeutic relationship in psychoanalysis, counselling, psychology, psychotherapy and related fields. It provides a framework for integration, pluralism or deepening singularity using a framework of five facets of therapeutic relationship potentially available in every kind of counselling or psychodynamic work. And in all other professions. And in all of life." From the preface to the second edition. ".....my view of Petruska Clarkson's writing style is that it is a mixture of academic, poet, artist and expert - extraordinary and sometimes even infuriating - but I feel the reader would benefit from exploring more of her work and re-reading her books to appreciate and get to know her style. Excitement, challenges, imagery, mind stretching intricacies and thought provoking passions, are just some of the hidden jewels that are there in her book waiting to be discovered!!" From the introduction to the second edition by Stephanie Wilson.

Product Description

This text provides coverage of the uses and abuses of the therapeutic relationship in counselling, psychology, psychotherapy and related fields. It provides a framework for integration, pluralism or deepening singularity with reference to five kinds of therapeutic relationship potentially available in every kind of counselling or psychodynamic work.

The work incoporates training and supervision perspectives and examples of course design, uses in assessment and applications to group and couples as well as to organizations.

Dealing with an issue of increasing complexity, the book should be of value and significance to psychotherapists, psychoanalysts, clinical and counselling psychologists and other professionals working in the field of helping human relationships such as doctors, social workers, teachers and counsellors.

By A. J. Cull VINE™ VOICE
Format:Paperback
The Therapeutic Relationship is a very insightful, useful and stimulating book, well worth reading by anyone who is starting a career in counselling or any of the helping professions. Petruska Clarkson looks at five aspects of the therapeutic relationship (the working alliance, plus the transferential, reparative/developmentally needed, person-to-person and transpersonal relationships.) Theory-wise, she has a psychodynamic background but her book contains examples of other approaches too, including transpersonal psychology, so is particularly suited to someone on an integrative counselling course, such as myself. It is not a light read, and demands quite a bit of concentration, but is highly rewarding.

This book gives a thorough explanation and guide on how to establish and maintain a therapeutic relationship within the world of counselling and therapy. A clear set of criteria for every situation.

...is it deserved? Yes, is the resounding answer. It was the prescribed textbook for my two year diploma course in integrative counselling, and the model of integration proposed in it is theoretically concise yet wide in scope. This is definitely an academic book, therefore a dictionary by the side may well be needed. Why should that be a complete detraction? Why is it that everything we tackle has to be easy? This profession has its jargon, which has to be learned somewhere. There are plenty of other books that are less dense conceptually, more reader-friendly, we could say. Yet it is to this book that I return time after time to clarify ideas to myself, to be inspired, to be stretched professionally and on the human level.
