Book Description

12 Jun 2012
The present work might be described as, to some extent, a contribution to the history of the theory of harmony. Notwithstanding the extensive and highly speciahzed hterature which we possess, deahng with the history and the art of music, a hterature which of late years has been enormously enriched, comparatively little attention has been given to the history and development of the theory of harmony, which, ever since the time of Rameau, has been considered b} musicians themselves to be intimatehconnected with the art of music. Coussemaker sH istoire de rharmonie du moyen-dge has to do with the history of the art of music during theM iddle A ges, rather than with its theory. The Esqnisse de I histoire de I harmonie ofF etis is a real histor- of harmonic theory, and of harmonic systems. But it is, from various points of view, inadequate. It would be quite impossible, for example, to gain from the brochure ofF etis any real acquaintance with Rameau stheoretical achievements, or the nature of his researches in the domain of harmony; while Zarlino is dismissed with the remark that he is unable to present to us any synoptic science of chords !W ith regard toD r. Riemann simportant work, Geschichte derM usiktheorie ini IX.-XIX Jahrhnnderi, it is evident that its author does not consider it to be a history of the theory of harmony, since he makes no attempt even to summarize the systems of such distinguished theorists as Tartini, Hauptmann, andF etis, as well as of other theorists.
