Product Description

Product Description

Tobe Hooper returns with a second instalment in his notorious saga about the inappropriate use of power tools in the Lone Star state. This time around the action focuses on Texas Ranger Lofty Enright (Dennis Hopper), a man obsessed with finding the lunatic murderers of his brother's kids. When he hears that DJ Vantia Block (Caroline Williams) has a recording of a chainsaw attack made when Leatherface and his pals descended upon a caller during a radio phone-in, he tries to persuade her to use the recording to lure the killers out into the open. She agrees, but neither DJ nor Ranger are quite prepared for the madness they are about to encounter.

From Amazon.co.uk

Opinion is mixed as to whether Texas Chainsaw Massacre 2 is a worthy successor to Tobe Hooper's seminal slasher flick. The story picks up 14 years after the events of the first film, which have long since passed into local legend. On a relentless search for the maniacs who murdered his wheelchair-bound nephew Franklin, Lieutenant "Lefty" Enright (Dennis Hopper) is drawn to the scene of a brutal roadside killing in Red River, Texas. He soon forms an alliance with Stretch (Caroline Williams), a feisty female radio DJ who inadvertently broadcasts the chainsaw murder of two drunken frat boys live on her late-night phone-in request show. At Lefty's request she replays the tape on air and soon after receives a terrifying visit from two deranged fans, Leatherface and Chop Top, who are intent on killing her. Stretch escapes, and together with Lefty follows the trail of the gruesome twosome into the bowels of the deserted San Jacinto historical theme park, which hides a Leatherface house of horrors.

In contrast to the chilling, snuff movie scenario of the original, Hooper whoops it up with this 1986 sequel brimming with gruesome humour, without welching on the thrills. Writer LM Kit Carson (Paris, Texas) reworks Leatherface into a tragic, almost naïve figure trapped beneath a horrific façade and fleshes out his thoroughly dysfunctional family with the introduction of baby brother ChopTop--a steel-plated Vietnam vet. Leatherface's old man (now called Drayton Sawyer) and Grandpa are carried over from the first film. Dennis Hopper is clean cut but dead-eyed in a typically manic performance as the cowboy detective driven by revenge--think of an embryonic Frank Booth from Blue Velvet with a fetish for power tools. TCM2 is a wildly imaginative experiment in terror that stays true to its trashy exploitation roots.

On the DVD: The lack of extra features on this disc (apart from the standard theatrical trailer) is a major oversight given that TCM2 has had no previous theatrical or video release in the UK. A director's commentary would have been especially welcome, as well as the addition of the deleted scenes featured on the US laserdisc and special edition VHS versions of this film. Static menus provide options to watch the film with English, Spanish or Italian dialogue and subtitles in Danish, Norweigian and Swedish. The main feature is of more than adequate picture quality and presented in 16:9 anamorphic format. --Chris Campion --This text refers to the DVD edition.

I'm going to review several versions of this film's release, going backwards chronologically. Hopefully it's labelled well enough you can dip in and grab the one you want.

REVIEW OF THE 2013 (The Texas Chainsaw Massacre 2 Blu-ray) from ARROW:

Truly a milestone, this may well be Arrow's best ever release (the Lifeforce Blu-ray [Limited Edition Steelbook] is another contender). It features 3 discs and one book, neatly grouped by a slipcase but in seperate books, making for an elegant package.

The artwork on the box is not my preference (to this day the only digital release of these films to use the Breakfast Club spoof artwork is the German Blu-ray, and no home video release has ever used the Howling-inspired poster with Leatherface cutting through a door) but it's very good and just about the best original cover it could have had, much better than the awful Gruesome edition cover in the US (which attempted to make it look like a sequel to the 2003 remake) or the even older cover of the first dvd with an unappealing picture of Dennis Hopper. The packaging is nice to hold but looks somewhat vulnerable to shelf wear (you'll want to be careful). Also included is a Certificate of Authenticity, complete with "Limited Edition Pressing Number" (and on the back of which is finally and thankfully a reproduction of Cannon's original "Breakfast Club" spoof poster!), and there's also an Arrow Video postcard (mine was for an upcoming release of "Remo: Unarmed and Dangerous" aka. Remo Williams).

Arrow Video has put together an outstanding package for this cult classic chainsaw follow-on. It is hard to think of a better all-round release than this. We have a faithful transfer of the uncut movie, a brilliant book of opinionated critique, fabulous documentaries and features galore, plus hi-def editions of two of Tobe Hooper’s rare early works! Seriously, alongside the supplement-packed original movie and its dazzling transfer on Blu, Head-Cheese fans can happily retire to hog-heaven and rev their saws in deep satisfaction and luxury. This is a superb movie that satisfies on a purely visceral and gut level and tickles the darkest of funny-bones

Some people have never taken to the satirical stance of Chainsaw Massacre 2 but, seriously, where else do you think that Hooper could have gone with the material? We’ve had further adventures, remakes and prequels and then the inevitable 3D lunacy, but the real meat of the matter lies in these first two official buzz-sawing yarns. This is a superb movie that satisfies on a purely visceral and gut level, tickles the darkest of funny-bones and genuinely adds to the mythos of the inbred Texan clan of redneck renegades, as well as making a delicious poke-in-the-eye statement about the superficial, money-grubbing decade of excess.

Excessive, wacky and extremely funny, Texas Chainsaw Massacre 2 doesn’t do what you think it will, but once you settle into its wicked exuberance, you should have a big, bloody ball with it. The original movie is an unparalleled masterpiece of the macabre, but then so is this, in its own right.

A grotesque gem of a sequel gets an awesome UK release from Arrow!

4.0 out of 5 stars Same Director, Wacky New Direction. 9 July 2012
By Ben
Personally I did enjoy this movie, it's a completely over the top cheesy/goofy 80's B-Movie. It was directed by "Tobe Hooper" who created the 1974 original, why the change from a serious, ominous film was changed into a basic spoof is beyond me but I still like this movie.

A documentary I watched claimed that this film has so much stuff cut that it's not how it was meant to be from the director. And it's not available in an uncut format.
Buy the "Gruesome Edition" if you can as my standard edition literally just has the film on the disc & a gallery I think. There's no special features at all, tempted to sell my version and buy the gruesome one!

But yeah worth a watch if your a Tcm fan, I own all the films including the two newest remake thingymajigs. Buy it, get some beers in & get your pals round!

5.0 out of 5 stars "..GREAT SEQUEL, AMAZING ARROW BLU-RAY.." 26 Nov 2013
I think this movie gets too much negativity, its really worth checking out, especially now arrow films has given it the royal treatment on Blu-ray, the story carries on nicely from the original in the best way possible, Tobe Hooper once again directs, in many ways the sequel is better than the original, we get an amazingly insane performance from Bill Johnson who plays the role of the infamous Leatherface, the rest of the cast too is fantastic and all add to a deeply insane portrayal of one of the most messed up families in movie history, and of course a youngish Dennis Hopper playing the lead who is hunting down the family for revenge, this movie takes on a darker edge than the original which is no surprise really as it was made 12 years after, this movie thanks to Arrow films has been given a great HD transfer and had scenes restored so it has more gore than previous UK DVD releases, this box set also contains a very cool book and extra bonus discs crammed full of hours of features and bonus early films from Tobe Hooper plus more, this really is the holy grail version of this movie, a must for fans and horror buffs in general, its a great film, everyway as fun as the original, crazy over the top violence, black comedy, this truly is also a classic too, there wasn't another good chainsaw movie made after this one!!
