Book Description

Set twenty years after VANILLA BEANS & BRODO and ten years after BEL VINO, THE TERRACOTTA MADONNA continues the story of Australians Isabella and Luigi, who gave up their lives to move to the medieval Montalcino, a village in Tuscany. Isabella tells of a Tuscany that is closer to reality than the mystical dream it is so often portrayed to be. Her true story involves not only her personal struggles in moving and adapting to Montalcino (her reasons for which are a secret that none in the village knows), but also of the curious rituals and traditions within a society that struggles to cope with the modern world.

5.0 out of 5 stars Another more intimate look within Tuscany 24 Jun. 2014

This is my third book from Dusi and I am continually amazed at the author's ability to bring forth the real voice of her characters. In this volume the surface is scraped away (from Montalcino and the author) and a more real, albeit sometimes raw, view of life in a hill town in Italy is revealed. I have walked these streets and spoken with these characters and I can vouch their authenticity. I also can report that the friendly competition amongst the quartiere is well reported. It is a delightful book and my only hope is that we do not have to wait another decade for the next installment although this volume proves the wait worthwhile. Read all three!

I had a hard time putting this book down, and when I finished it I wanted more. Isabella has a way of describing Tuscany and Montalcino that will leave you wanting to go there and experience the things she is writing about. You will get an education on one of the best wines in the world Brunello di Montalcino. She also describes the sweet life in detail. I absolutely recommend the book.

Isabella Dusi is a gifted writer and very thorough researcher. In "The Terracotta Madonna," Isabella is more than that. She has written a poignant and soul-searching non fiction that is both courageous and healing. She is able to laugh at herself which is so endearing and lets us cry with her in sadness and weep with her joy. The village of Montalcino I know so well having visited many times, sketching and painting the breathtaking scenery but Isabella has taken her readers past the picturesque landscape, the medieval mansions and into the extraordinary lives of the villagers who have gathered her and husband Luigi into their fold, their "quartiere Pianello". For anyone who loves the beauty of Tuscany, drinks the incredible wine of the area Brunello di Montalcino, and who is fascinated by history, The Terracotta Madonna is a must-read. Five stars, if there were six, I would give it six.
5.0 out of 5 stars Bringing the Story Full Circle 15 Nov. 2014

Isabella's third book brings her story, and that of Montalcino, full circle. She unlocks the true meaning of the quartiere, and their importance to the culture of Montalcino. She shares the personal tragedies that led her to this hilltop town and lets us see how Montalcino has healed and opened her heart. She and Luigi are such wonderful people--I've been blessed to come to know them a little, and multiple visits to Montalcino--and Isabella's books, have helped me understand why Montalcino has become a special part of my own life. Grazie, Isabella.

This is Isabella's best because she weaves her own story into the wonderful world of Montalcino. After visiting this enchanting city, complete with a walking tour by Isabella herself, the book is true to life in a small town in Italy. The traditions and history are expertly told by a wonderful storyteller.
