Book Description

4 July 2011

The novel of the BkyB and Hallmark co-venture ‘The 10th Kingdom’ is a contemporary drama set in a fantasy world where magic and fairy tale characters come to life.

This is an Alice in Wonderland for grown-ups and children alike, a witty and satirical reflection of contemporary society told as an epic tale of good versus evil.

Follow the thrilling adventures of Virginia and Tony, a father and daughter from New York, who unwittingly find themselves in a parallel universe known as The Nine Kingdoms. Virginia and Tony join forces with a schizophrenic man-wolf, and Prince, a handsome golden retriever formally known as Prince Wendell, grandson of Snow White until his wicked stepmother turned him into a dog. The unlikely heroes then embark on an epic quest to save Prince from the evil Queen and restore him to the throne.

This lavish $40 million 10 x 1 hour fantasy drama will be broadcast on Sky One in the UK from Sunday 16th April at 7pm and the next 9 Sunday’s thereafter.

Amazon Review

The 10th Kingdom is the novelisation of the highly praised and exceptionally lavish television fantasy series. Somewhere between Alice's Adventures in Wonderland by Lewis Carroll and Stephen Donaldson's The Mirror of her Dreams, The 10th Kingdom is New York, from where a portal in Central Park takes waitress Virginia, her father Tony and "the dog formerly known as prince" on an epic adventure through nine realms based on classic fairytales. Virginia encounters Snow White, Cinderella and the Troll King, but this is a very knowing and sometimes surprising retelling, shot through with humour that strikes a fine line between tongue-in-cheek and genuine affection for the original stories:

"I blame my parents," Wolf said. "They were both enormous. They couldn't stop eating. Every day I came home from school and it was eat this, eat that, eat her"

Kathryn Wesley's name may be unfamiliar because she is a pseudonym for two best-selling authors who between them have won the World Fantasy and Hugo Awards and written over 60 previous novels, as well as recently novelising the Arabian Nights miniseries. The 10th Kingdom is inevitably episodic, but it is also whimsically swashbuckling entertaining and anyone who enjoyed Hallmark's Merlin series, novelised by James Mallory as a trilogy beginning with Merlin: The old Magic, should find much pleasure in these worlds of fantasy.--Gary S. Dalkin

5.0 out of 5 stars Fantastic! 3 Sep 2000
By A Customer
Having seen the series on TV, I was excited by the thought of being able to read between the lines of the screenplay; I especially wanted to know the Queen's true feelings at the end. My questions were answered in the book. I found the book well written and couldn't put it down once I'd started reading! Although it is fair to say the book is very similar to the TV series, I enjoyed reading it immensely and will probably read it again soon!...

5.0 out of 5 stars Simply Brilliant 4 Jan 2002
By A Customer
this book is probably the best book i have ever read, i found it very enjoyable. Virginia and her father Tony star their jouney in Ney yrk city to the the Snow White memorial prison. this book may be confusing for the first few minutes as it hops person to person. but this gives an effect of more points of veiw. the language is very understandable. you can trust me on this, i was 12 when i read this and i understood every word!

i strongly recomend this book to whoever is a great book lover or anyone who just wants to curl up with a brilliant book.
