Product Description

Review

'David Lewis has provided an accessible account of very complicated area of study. His careful presentation of Islam, geo-politics and the political cultures of Central Asia refreshing. Based on years of research experience in the region, Lewis offers an insightful and balanced narrative that is must-read.' ---Professor Shahram Akbarzadeh, National Centre of Excellence for Islamic Studies, The University of Melbourne

'The author's first-hand experience of the region is evident from the text, which intersperses a pacey narrative with anecdotal evidence. Deep understanding of the region is worn lightly in the text, which makes the book both highly readable, but also informative.' ---Michael Denison, University of Leeds

Review

David Lewis's firsthand experience of the region is evident from the text, which intersperses a well-paced narrative with anecdotal evidence. Lewis's deep understanding of the region is worn lightly, which makes the book both highly readable and informative. -- Michael Denison, University of Leeds A good book that tells a terrible story of political and foreign policy failures... Recommended. Choice 2/1/09 This book offers a stock-taking of the history, evolution, and implications of the West's foreign policy towards Central Asian states. -- Najam Abbas The Muslim World Book Review Vol. 29, #4 --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

I loved this book, I could barely put it down. I have an interest in Central Asia politics for some reason not known to me and this book gave me a history and a mostly up-to-date political analysis on their governments. I felt the focus was mainly on Uzbekistan, and although initially I was annoyed by this, it turned out to provide key background information for the rest of book, with frequent mentions of events covered in the Uzbekistan section later. The one criticism I found was the section on Tajikistan seemed a bit short, but this did impact on my overall enjoyment. Just one thing to mention, this book is not fully update with the situation in Kyrgyzstan i.e. the recent overthrow of the President, but does cover the majority of the events prior to it.

Overall a great book for anyone, either wanting an overview of the region before moving on to further books (as I did) or for people who are already well-informed about this region politically. 5 stars.

Insightful overview of recent politics in Central Asia 30 Nov 2011
By Laura Adams - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Hardcover|Amazon Verified Purchase
This book drew me in right away and I found it hard to put it down in order to accomplish other tasks such as getting on the bus or feeding myself. The writing flows nicely and covers a lot of ground very quickly. However, those not familiar with Central Asia might get lost in the deluge of names and dates. It's a great book for someone already at least somewhat in the know about Central Asian politics of the 2000s and would work well as a text for a class.

Lewis has his own perspective primarily based on interviews and conversations with those dissatisfied with the regimes in question, but he also lived and worked in the region for many years and his clear-cut, critical assessment of both the local regimes and the foreign powers that support them rarely turns cynical. He is harsh but fair, and doesn't turn the hardships of Central Asians into a joke or an excuse for a polemic.

Columbia University Press should get rid of the proofreader who worked on this manuscript. There are lots of obvious typos that got left in.
