'Masterly' (The Times )

Step aboard .. and embark on a magical mystery voyage. (Books for Keeps )

'Sophie Masson is decidedly a captivating narrator who certainly knows how to hypnotise her readers.' (Lollipops )

'One of the strengths of Masson's work is this creation of parallel worlds of fantasy which interweave with the old folk tale but also produce echoes of myth.' (Australian Book Review )

CLEMENTINE: 'It is well written and the detail of court life and ways is enthralling. This book will appeal to anyone who has loved the fairytale, for all the trappings are present and correct. A fabulous novel which has been given the cover it deserves.' (Adele Geras, TES )

CARABAS: 'A sophisticated and timeless tale of magic and human nature.' (Weekend Australian )

Readers of Sophie Masson well know her knack for enchantment, but in "Tempestuous Voyage" she outdoes herself! In the young (and perfectly named) Hopewell, she has created an endearing character whose romantic fantasies can be cured only by a through-the-looking-glass adventure that crosses reality with legend. Going along for the ride are the enigmatic Captain Wolfe, menacing Davy Jones, and vulnerable Kit Sly, none of whom are as they seem. The disguises, enchantments, and good humor call Hopewell's famous cousin to mind, an added treat for Shakespeare lovers--he even makes a brief appearance. But one doesn't have to be acquainted with Shakespeare to appreciate the story as a singular coming-of-age tale.

hopewells hopeless voyage 15 Feb 2005
By Kotori - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback
Drawing on the plays and writings of The Tempest, Midsummer Nights dream, As you like it, and numerous other shakespearean legend, Masson creates the tale of Hopewell, Williams distant cousin.

Born to a Puritan family, Hopewell has dreamed all his life of the stage, and tried to live his life through the magic of his cousins words & dreaming.

When his puppy love is rejected, Hopewell decides to run away to sea (as implied by the title) to find his fortune. How predictable.

Due to some thoughtless acts of kindness and a desperate bravado Hopwell earns himself a dedicated swain. . .

The ship he boards is searching for the legendary isle of The Lost - ruled by the Alchemist.

Hopewell is an innocent fool and as such, the key to finding the island. Rushing in where angels fear to tread and all that stuff he gets himself into rather a lot of trouble.

This book, although interesting enough to finish, was never a mystery, and blatantly borrowed and embroidered from the original Prospero & Callista and so on

On the whole, not Masson's best effort. For a cleverer book by her, try The Black Foxes, or Friday's Child.
