5.0 out of 5 stars Every intelligent teenager should read this book 12 Nov 1999
By A Customer
Format:Paperback
This book argues that school is the antithesis of democracy, that children and teenagers are being deprived of their freedom and trained for life in totalitariasm and they are learning less than they would out of school. It makes the obvious point that schools destroy people's love of learning replacing it with a system based on fear of failure. It then offers advice on how to quit school including persauding your parents. The next section explains how to use different resources available in the community in order to learn and the final section explains the possibilities open to unschoolers to earn money . Every teenager should read this book, but so should every teacher, parent and politician.

Makes you wonder why you never came to these conclusions before, if you really wanted to see an "educated" public, hence a happy, common sensed, and open, public. It reaffirms what Jefferson and Locke and Aristotle saw in "Freedom" as the ultimate goal in personal and public happiness.

5.0 out of 5 stars Home Education ~ the way of the future 25 Nov 2010
Format:Paperback|Amazon Verified Purchase
As the author of Life Without School: the quiet revolution, I was thrilled to come across this genius book. It should be required reading, not just for teens, but for parents, teachers and every human in western society. We need to wake up to the impact 'education' in institutions is having on us as a species. This book has so many useful resources. I really can't recommend it enough. Simply brilliant. I'm giving this to all my friends who want to take the leap into unschooling.
