Amazon Review

"Techno-pagan"? "Sort of hippie-meets-cyberspace, devil-may-care". "Octopus"? "I don't want to be American anymore. I want to be a global citizen. I want to spread my tentacles over the world and this place as a planet, without nations". "Messiah"? Well, if you'd consumed this amount and diversity of drugs, a messianic complex might well start to develop.

This explains the eye-catching title of Ian Winn's freewheeling, global travelogue, which journeys along the hippie trail in search of enlightenment and spiritually enriching drug experiences. The book goes from Egypt to Bombay and Tibet, moving through experiences and encounters which are decidedly not to be found in The Stupid Tourist Handbook series, books the travellers try to avoid. You will encounter mystical events amidst the pyramids, weird telepathic dreams, researchers for an improbable coffee table book on silly straws, all the delights of Indian holy festivals, and a stubborn camel called John Major. Winn's entertaining book clearly comes from the Beat and hippie traditions of drug-fuelled travelling, even jumping into flights of free flowing poetry on numerous occasions. Fun for those who like their New-Age thinking laced with stronger stuff. -- Roger Luckhurst

Never having been a student backpacker, or even any kind of user (20 Silk Cut and copious amounts of lager being enough for me); the journey I have just been taken on enlightened me, taught me and made me laugh. A great "I want more" ending. Read it and you'll start to think in rhyme.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Kerouac for the new millennium? 5 May 1999
By A Customer
Format:Paperback
Part novel, part travelogue, part autobiography, Ian Winn's first published novel is more than the sum of these parts. Travelling through Egypt and India, he writes with wit, perception and a sense of self beyond that of any other more experienced novelists. The Messiah is searching - for what neither he nor the reader knows - but as he picks up clues along the way he unfolds a marvellous text and an enviable list of characters.

5.0 out of 5 stars a truly inspiring read 29 April 1999
By A Customer
Format:Paperback
Now some may say that Ian Winn is completely crazy - some may say that he has lost the plot - and indeed, in this book he probably has, in some respects ; or at least he has in the eyes of one who hasn't - but as a fellow traveller, poet and suchlike, i found this book truly inspirational - makes me want to get on the road today, not tommorow.... ....the text weaves with a melody, rhythm and energy that transfixed me throughout the whole thing - and it isn't just the poetry he writes, or the tale he tells, or the absolute madness of it all, but the fact that he does it all in such style - very slick, very intelligent, and very self aware. .....a transition from a few heavy DMT trips and we are taken into the mind of the Techno Pagan Octopus Messiah, a complex and colourful mind; one stooped in discovery, dreams and visions - we are led around Egypt and India in a quest for amongst other things, an unhatched dragon egg manifested in the form of an amethyst crystal, mysterious meetings of ash covered saddhus, Egyptians all called Mohammed, an Osho commune which seems slightly over priced, and a collection of other seekers on the India trail, which serve to both aid and annoy..... it is a voyage of self discovery; a shedding of past life, and a rebirth of a new and very exciting poet ...
