Evil In Ink. American tattoo artist Jake Sawyer explores and exploits ethnic designs from around the world. At a tattoo expo in Singapore, he glimpses the exotic world of traditional Samoan tatau in the work of the fiercely proud Alipati. Fatefully, Jake is attracted to Alipati's beautiful cousin, Sina. When Jake impulsively steals an ancient Samoan tattooing tool, he unwittingly unleashes a powerful angry spirit. Suddenly, his art takes on a frightening new dimension, exposing everyone he touches, including the feisty Singaporean Victoria, to mortal peril. Sensing the solution can only lie with the Samoans, Jake follows them to Auckland, where he runs into an old adversary, tattoo artist Crash and a new one, the respected Samoan elder Aleki Va'a. His investigation takes him on a devastating journey into the dark heart of Pacific mysticism. There, Jake must recover his own soul if he is to save the woman he loves and escape with his life.

The Tattooist blends staple themes from horror films (a curse from beyond the grave, dark things lurking in the shadows, a young hero whose miscalculation involves him in a gruesome series of deaths) with an interesting New Zealand twist, examining the coming-of-age rituals of the Samoan people.
Yet while The Tattooist is undoubtedly dark, it avoids many horror cliches -- the boo! scares and buckets of blood are mercifully kept under control. Instead it unwraps the mystery of what's happening to the hero in a pacy yet thoughtful manner with plenty of suspense. There were a few scenes which made us wince, but in the main we were wrapped up in the plot. I enjoyed it far more than The Mist which came out this summer, for instance.
For me, The Tattooist is a good example of how a tight script and decent direction can make the most out of a small budget. It's not overlong, either. Really, if you're after a horror movie then this probably isn't what you'd want to watch: it's more like a supernatural thriller.
If this were a big budget film with huge names in it then it would only rate three stars, but it's a very good example of how a simple film can be made to be intriguing and stylish without being smothered by mumbled dialogue or overblown direction. So it's a 4-star B-movie, if that makes sense!

.....And indeed he does, or rather it does. Samoan tattoo superstition reveals the reality of otherworldly belief systems when Antipodean fellow nicks a Samoan's skin-piercer (if you ever come across one, it looks like a back scratcher, and it would be advisable not to get them mixed up) and becomes cursed. Thereafter, everyone he tattoos conventionally ends up with their tattoos being added to by the Ink Thing until they end up looking like they've got black capillary veins all over them and they - no, I won't spoil it. This film's subject is unusual, as is the cultural context, and in that respect it reminded me of the Maori centred films out of New Zealand, like 'Once Were Warriors', although there is no comparison or similarity other than the different cultural context. Tension is pretty good, keeps you interested, and the acting's not bad. Overall not a bad little movie.

I had seen the trailer for this several times and wasn't quite sure if I would like this. I decided to give it a watch, and I was pleasanly surprised, it started a little slow and little dialogue, but it eventually picked up the pace and I did enjoy this. I will say whilst the story is quite unique, there is very little gore. I thought there might be a bit more violence and blood, as this is what it portrayed in the trailer. However the plot is good and interesting, and the acting is pretty good too! There is nothing massively standout about this film other than its plot which is a bit different to other horror films on the market, although predictable in some places. Overall worth a watch, even if just for the shots of a naked Jason Behr!

I waited since August 2008 for this DVD. Really anxious to see it.

What a disappointment it turned out to be. Story could have been much better.
