Product Description

Product Description

The complete story of beer, from ancient Egypt to contemporary micro - brewery styles, with an emphasis on the art of tasting and appreciating this ever popular beverage. Every beer has a unique, specific flavour, and this can be analyzed and examined in much the same way as wine. The difference is that while the qualities of a wine will differ from year to year, the skill of the brewer is revealed by the ability to achieve the same result each and every time. The taste of beer will explore the way in which brewers work, describing brewing methods used around the world and explaining how the basic ingredients - barley, hops, water and yeast - combine to give each beer it's individual character. A unique feature of The taste of beer is the flavour wheel, which is based on the method that brewers use to analyze the balance of flavours when making beers. Roger Protz explains the principles of the flavour wheel and provides 1 for each of the 3 main brewing styles. The taste of beer is also a guide to appreciation of beerm with an entire chapter devoted to the pleasures of beer drinking, including suggestions for organizing a beer tasting at home as well as the art of drinking beer with food. This book restores beer to it's rightful place as the ultimate drink, and brings together many of the interesting traditions associated with it's drinking.

This lavish, coffee table book has it all. In concise and clear language, it traces the history of beer, the ingredients used to brew it, and of course, the various types of beer. Generously illustrated, it can be dipped into, or read cover to cover. Anyone who has wondered what the difference between various beers is, should buy this book. It would also make a good present for a relative who enjoys a drink. I learned a lot about beers history around the world and was fascinated at how Europe can be divided into beer regions. Definitely one for the bookshelf.

A great appetizer 2 Aug 2001
By Christoph Zierholz - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback
This book should be a enjoyable read for any beer enthusiast as it is thorough in its coverage of the topic, albeit at a broader level, and is very clear and entertaining. Whilst it the book may not appeal as much to readers who prefer more story-like narratives or require more infusions of humour to keep interested, to me it nevertheless covers it's chosen topic well enough to earn my four stars. Taste is difficult to qualify and impossible to quantify so most of us will collect many books on this topic anyway. This one will give you a great descriptions of the styles, how they are created and what to expect from the samples. At other times you will want to hone in on particular beers and for that other books (eg MJ's Ultimate Beer) will fit the bill. It's like having a beer - who wants to stop at just one... Cheers.
