5.0 out of 5 stars Fantastic Read 21 Oct 2009
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
This book can be read as a stand alone novel, but for those that have read 'The Chanters of Tremaris' series it features some well known characters.
This book is set around three characters, Tansy a laundry maid, Skir a young priest king, who's countries are at war, and Perrin, a travelling mercenary with the power to talk to animals.
As the three flee Arvestel they meet and situations throw them together. Pursued by soldiers, and haunted by the Witch-Woman's sinister magic, they ride for their lives through hostile lands.
To survive they must learn to trust each other, strip away the layers of deception that surround Skir, and challenge the tyranny of the Witch-Woman.
Can three youngsters with nothing in common learn to work together, and will the power of the priest king be enough to bring peace across the lands.
A compelling read, that is full of adventure, laughter, sadness and love. A must read for all. Another great piece from Kate Constable.

3.0 out of 5 stars I could have lived without it 23 Feb 2012

Sadly, it was a bit of a disappointment. The novel tells the story of Tansy, Perrin and Skir and their ensuing journey to try and return Skir to Cragonlands. The setting is the most interesting aspect of the novel, it is the same world as that of Singer of All Songs, her previous series, and it focuses on that of the Threelands: Cragonlands, Baltimar and Arvestel. I enjoyed the connections between this and her other novels and seeing how things had changed (the good and bad) and how things are continuing to change. The writing didn't flow very smoothly, which I think might have had something to do with the dialogue (there was almost none in SOAS and yet read quickly)and the fact that you never really knew who was thinking what. I kept stopping to think, "who's thoughts are these? Skir? Perrin?"

The characters are not fully fleshed out. Some of their actions don't make much sense nor does their attachment to one another. That said they were all likable characters, I felt Skir was the most relatable in his lame attempts to appear cool and composed, and his apprehension toward the future and his role in it, but I didn't care for any of them all that much.

The biggest disappointment was the ending. It was obviously rushed at a time when things were just heating up and the bigger picture was finally being explained. And the relationships that I was just beginning to warm up to were completely obliterated and they became strangers- to each other and myself- again.

OK First you need to know that this book follows the Chanters of Tremaris Trilogy by Kate Constable. This book can stand on it's own but why wouldn't you want to read the series before I loved the series so much I had to buy this. It follows on of the characters from the trilogy and I really liked going back to one of my favorite lands! The story was great!

2.0 out of 5 stars Disappointing 30 May 2012
By Amazon Customer - Published on
I have read Constable's other three books (The Chanters of Tremaris Trilogy) and I was really excited when I found this book in the library. I couldn't wait to read more of her work. Unfortunately, this book did not live up to the others. I didn't find any of the characters likeable, the narration was confusing because it jumped from one character's head to another without warning instead of sticking to a single limited perspective like in the other books, and the action and plot were slow and boring. The conclusion was the most disappointing because nothing was actually resolved. Needless to say, I was extremely disappointed by this book. If you want to read some good work by Kate Constable, I highly recommend The Singer of All Songs, The Waterless Sea, and The Tenth Power, but steer clear of this book.
