The tarot can be quite complex; this book made it easy to understand. I like the color charts in the middle for a quick reference. The stories make it easier to remember the meanings of the cards. This book is easy to read. I would recommend it for people who just want to have fun with the tarot as well as an entry point for people who are studying it more seriously.

Great book. Had another of his in paperback and was delighted I could get it this on kindle. Card readings that come from experience and clear intuition rather than general vague meanings. Great for spiritual development rather than just 'seeing into the future' Work well with any pack not just rider waites

The only book you NEED!!! 31 Mar. 2010
By Renee C. Jonas - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Paperback
This is an interesting and informative read. This book is so comprehensive while remaining an entertaining and enjoyable read, a must have for anyone serious about tarot. The only other books you'll want will be Paul Fenton-Smith's - Mastering the Tarot and Tarot Masterclass - all three books are excellent stand alone books; they also team together so by the end of all three you really are a master tarot reader. More than just information about the cards, there is knowledge for everyone - the professional reader, the beginner, the curious. It's interest level is such that it reads like a novel, with amusing stories and examples throughout; however don't be fooled - this is a genuine text book and once you have it in your collection, you will refer to it again and again. Suitable for beginners, respected by Masters of this craft, this is the only book on tarot that you truly NEED!

A Classic That Still Guides Me 18 April 2006
By David Lloyd - Published on Amazon.com
I had read a few books about the Tarot but none that taught me as much as Paul Fenton-Smith's has. In fact, I have just 're-purchased' it as my original copy is in storage and it was easier to just buy it again than retrieve my original.

When I first read and understood this book, I did not understand any of the other wiccan, qabalistic or esoteric schools. This book, though, was the lens through which I was able to explore all those schools - without it I could not have done so.

Why? Because Mr Fenton-Smith's book relies on lively prose and real examples. For someone - like me - who was not ready to ponder the esoteric meaning of the Tarot, this book was like the gentle turn of a key - not forceful...but enough to make me think enough and accept enough to go ahead.

Today I am not a professional Tarot reader. I have, though, had times when Tarot has touched my and my querent's lives' forever. I'll never forget the elderly gentleman who'd travelled to Australia after an argument with his daughter. I was only "playing" with my cards, yet after my reading to him, I knew that "playing" was not part of their game.

I confess that this time was one of my more clairvoyant/telepathic times but the cards - the basis of which I'd learned and studied through this book - made sure I stayed grounded and wasn't just relying solely on my own intuition.

Read this book if you'd like to learn more of the Tarot.

Completely taken by surprise. Fantastic Resource 18 Jan. 2012
By By The Book - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Paperback
WOW. I was initially looking for a book that offered the traditional interpretations of the symbology, so when I started reading this book I was a bit disappointed. As a result I started skipping around, and began to discover many insightful pearls. I'm so glad I continued reading. What I discovered is although he doesn't really offer run of the mill interpretations (found in most tarot books); his take on the symbols, and his interpretations of the archetypes is so refreshing.

There were numerous moments that left me thinking,"mmmm, really?" and made me reread the sections. If you're a purist at heart, you may have a hard time agreeing with some of the interpretations. IMO however even when they may deviate from the traditional meanings, he offers really convincing translations based on his own experiences, or the way he interprets the imagery.

I recommend this book. If you are a beginner studying tarot, I think having another resource with more elaboration on the traditional meanings would be very helpful as well. I find the value in this book being that it offers completely new ways of looking at some of the aspects of the cards, and this way of thinking laterally opened lots of doors for new interpretations/understanding of the keys.

Highly recommended.
