5.0 out of 5 stars A Fantastic Primer 7 Jun 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
Not only is this a great book which succinctly discusses the mechanics of Twitter but is also addresses the bigger question which many new people have: "why?". It does this via various real world, personal examples which uncover the serendipity which can happen when you authentically engage and genuinely (and selflessly) try to help.

In my business I look to help people & businesses bring their story online; and I always buy this book for them if I think Twitter is a route we should explore.

Recommended. No, essential.

5.0 out of 5 stars Good character. 16 May 2013

I've been using Twitter for a good few years now and whilst I've had some fun, I was looking for more meaningful interactions. This book gives some really brilliant examples and ideas of how chance "meetings" (or should that be tweetings?) have led to big and beautiful things.

The book addresses all the questions a new Twit (?) would want to ask, as well as helping existing users to make better use of their accounts. I am already seeing a difference in the way people interact with and follow me, so I can say that these methods are definitely worth a try.

Recommended for anyone wanting to use Twitter as a tool for their business, but also some relevant points for the hobby user.

This book is a very accessible introduction to using Twitter, with plenty of strategies that help you build your audience and influence people. With time-saving hints, and methods to distinguish yourself in a hugely busy environment.

I found the Tao of Twitter helpful so I got my mother-in-law to read it as she's just started using Twitter, but she complained that it was more aimed at business users and couldn't see the benefits.

5.0 out of 5 stars Very useful book 15 May 2013

I've been using twitter for a few years now for my own pleasure. I much prefer it to Facebook. However, I've struggled to keep up with it in the past year. I would say that this book has got me excited about Twitter again.

I have my own business interest on twitter but its the sharing of ideas that I really enjoy and finding that others really appreciate that. This book confirms that this is indeed a very important part of keeping a successful twitter account.

The author ties in very nicely the relationship one has with people you haven't met on your account. One person enjoyed his comments about some sport he was watching and they shared a moment. This was followed by a more personal direct message, which led to a meeting and sharing of ideas and giving the other person extra exposure.

There are plenty of ideas in this book and it is a good read. So if your curious about twitter, tired of Facebook give this book a read to give you a very good idea what Twitter is about.

4.0 out of 5 stars a helpful introduction to social networking 9 May 2013
By H. Ashford VINE™ VOICE
Format:Paperback|Amazon Vine™ Review (What's this?)
This book explains the basic concepts of Twitter in simple everyday language and provides what is more or less a step by step guide to getting started. It is very much focussed on how businesses can use Twitter (and other social networking routes) to raise their profile with a view to attracting audiences/customers/partners/suppliers, but the principles and methods described can be used by individuals just as effectively.

I found this book fascinating, easy to understand and follow, and very helpful. Schaefer not only clarifies the mechanisms for using Twitter, but also expounds an approach to (and a mindset for) social networking which I believe would help almost anyone.

In a market which is flooded with self-help business books, this is one that I would recommend to friends and colleagues.

Mark Schaefer explains how he, too, had a false start or two before he really found out how to make Twitter work as a business marketing tool. Schaefer is a marketing consultant and business academic - and now a marketing consultant specialising in social media - a proverbial one man band, and his advice, distilled down to the essence, is to communicate on Twitter in the same way as you would at a face to face networking meeting, like BNI or a Chamber of Commerce. You wouldn't read out press releases, make defamatory statements, make relentless sales pitches nor be gratuitously rude at that sort of a meeting. (Well, actually, I know some people who have come rather close to doing that, but they didn't get anywhere, so we get the message.) So, as you might at a face to face or "IRL" meeting (In Real Life - an interesting Twitterism, considering the implication that Twitter isn't real, but there we are!) you spend some time chatting about other subjects, finding out what's going on in someone's business and finding out how you might help, all short of a pushy sales pitch, you are much more likely to prosper. Provide meaningful content and be genuinely helpful.

Schaefer spends a little time discussing how bigger corporates and even medium sized companies can remain personal while complying with company policies and public relations strategies. McDonald's, for example, has its extensive Twitter team tweet on the same account, but the "sign off" their tweets with their initials, and people can follow links from the Twitter profile page back to the website and see the people behind the letters. US telecoms giant ATT has individual accounts in the style of @ATTSusan, another useful option. This knowledge alone made reading the book worth it for me.
