A DARK TALE OF DANGER AND DIESEL FOR THE STUDENT LOAN GENERATION...

Welcome to the Student Bubble.

Welcome to a world where the DJs play the same songs in the same order every single night, and the one (and only) hit wonder reigns supreme. Welcome to a world of crude cartoon and misplaced melodrama; a world free of all but the most trifling of consequences, where exaggerated sensitivity is rife and a semester’s success or suicide hangs on the whim of a woman.

Young Tommo wiles away his evenings in a purple drunken stupor, lost to the tender mercies of what he desperately wishes was a hopeless love affair, but in reality isn’t even that. Gristle, meanwhile, is enraged when his weak-bladdered housemate Spadge moves out, only to be replaced by a neurotic freak named Jamal, who dares not only to bring books into his house, but to read them too.

And for poor Will, matters are even worse. Women are staying in of a night! How’s he supposed to rack up his ‘tally’ of conquests if women daren’t leave their digs? They’re all terrified that they’ll be the next to fall prey to the invisible menace that has started stealing students away from the streets of Hull. Will has nothing to fear though – after all, he has his recently arrived destitute father to watch his back. And the fearsome Gristle. And the zealously neurotic Jamal. And the dangerously depressed Tom…

The Student Bubble is about to burst, and when it does, the degenerate residents of 146 Worthington Street will find themselves drowning in a reality that they’re not equipped to comprehend, let alone survive in.

5.0 out of 5 stars Another one for the Tally 12 Jan 2012
By Jaymz
Format:Kindle Edition
The Tally is a true to life portrayal of student life meets murder mystery, and unlike anything I have read before. The novel is at times puerile, but as already said, it is only trying to be an accurate depiction of student life, and the thought processes of the average male student, something the novel nails brilliantly. The Tally is on occasion laugh out loud funny, but with frequent asides of philosophical inquiry to add depth. The book, like the characters it portrays, has a superficially crude exterior but will regularly have you drawing parallels with your own experiences and forces you to ask the same questions of yourself as of the central characters.

With the polish that should come with experience I'm sure future works by Wolverson will be worth looking out for.

5.0 out of 5 stars Unpredictable and surreal, great read! 23 Jan 2012
By Spiros
Format:Kindle Edition
I really enjoyed reading this, it is fast paced, written in a way that reflects the emotional and mental fragility of the characters and handles local dialects really well to create really funny moments throughout the book. The storyline itself is very dark, but the real to life characters mean that you can enjoy the comedy while reading their decent into their own personal hell.

The characters in this book are ones that most people who have gone to uni can relate to. I think everyone has either had housemates, friends, or friends of friends who are just like some of the characters in the story. The writing style is very honest but is also very surreal, and often creates a stream of consciousness that brings you very close to a character and gives them depth and vulnerability, pulling you into the novel and the lives of the students. It is very enjoyable to read, conveying the random nature of uni life through the style of prose and down to earth realities like accidental drug taking, taxi fare dodging and housemates that wind you up but you grow to love them anyway.
A lot of men will be able to relate to the main characters; always thinking about girls, in competition with each other, all about the numbers but ultimately falling hopelessly in love with the wrong girls hwo were just supposed to be a another notch on the bedpost.

You also feel that the author has gone on a journey in writing this book, maybe exorcising some demons or reliving his student days, but either way you feel very much like he is a part of the book, especially towards the end. it is a very brave book with a very unconventional, enjoyable writing style, and for that reason alone (aside from the great dialects, emotional rollercoaster type characters and comedy moments) I'd highly recommend it!

5.0 out of 5 stars A dark ride 9 Mar 2012
By Pipsim
Format:Kindle Edition
I bought this book on a whim as I live near to Hull and have had many a good night out there. The story depicts student life in the city from the perspective of a group of young men thrown together in a student house. Their lives are interspersed with sex and drugs (I have obviously been going to the wrong pubs!) with the ominous backdrop of a serial killer targeting female students.

I would highly recommend this book as a tale of friendship and the dark underbelly of student life. The main characters are vividly realised and the plot keeps you guessing throughout. Also it is always good to see the Kindle supporting up and coming authors and I will be looking out for E.G. Wolverson's future work.
