Book Description

1 Jan 1985
On a brisk autumn day, a thirteen-year-old boy stands on the shores of the gray Atlantic, near a silent amusement park and a fading ocean resort called the Alhambra. The past has driven Jack Sawyer here: his father is gone, his mother is dying, and the world no longer makes sense. But for Jack everything is about to change. For he has been chosen to make a journey back across America–and into another realm.

One of the most influential and heralded works of fantasy ever written, The Talisman is an extraordinary novel of loyalty, awakening, terror, and mystery. Jack Sawyer, on a desperate quest to save his mother’s life, must search for a prize across an epic landscape of innocents and monsters, of incredible dangers and even more incredible truths. The prize is essential, but the journey means even more. Let the quest

5.0 out of 5 stars Absolutley masterful 2 Jun 2005
By A Customer
Format:Paperback
I would recommend this to anyone who has ever had any sense of imagination at all. This book is suited to all, fans of fantasy, fans of horror fans of either of the two authors. It is a perfect blending of genres which never fails to leave an impression. Its characters are brilliantly developed throughout, but its Jack Sawyers brilliant blend of heroism yet still just a boy that keeps you hooked to see what will hapeen to him next. As much as i do love this book however i will be honest, I would not have bothered with it had it not been for another Stephen King fantasy epic... The Dark Tower, I had heard of this books sequel "Black House" and decided I wanted to read it (and Ive yet to do so) but i then discovered Black House was a sequel to another called The Talisman, so i decided to go on and read that first. It was a great move, and this book actually compares well to The Tower itself. Other than that all I can do is say again, Read this book, fans of fantasy fans of King I urge you, you need this book in your life!

In my mind, to start with, I pictured Jack Sawyer as a very young boy. As the book goes further into his adventures I could sense him growing into a young man, and felt drawn into this and the other world with him, meeting strange creatures and characters. I just couldn't put this book down, and would recommend it to any lovers of fantasy.

5.0 out of 5 stars Beautiful 30 April 2005
Format:Paperback
This is a gorgeous book. The characters are utterly compelling, the worlds are rich and well described, the good guys are loveable but real, the bad guys are eminently despicable. Osmond scared the hell out of me, and Wolf absolutely broke my heart. Morgan of Orris is an incredible presence, underused but all the more terrifying when he does appear. I recommend this book to anyone over the age of 12.

5.0 out of 5 stars A spell-binding adventure laced with terror 7 Sep 2001
Format:Paperback
This is the best Spephen King book I have read and I have read almost all of his books. The way he and Peter Straub entwine horror with adventure is spell-binding. I could not put this book down, I had to know how Jack would survive each horrific situation he faced and, of course, wether he would manage to save his mother and The Territories. An absolultey fantastic read which will leave you with a magical tingle for years afterwards.

Un-putdown able this book grabs you right form the start and won't let go. Satisfyingly long, you will not want it to end.

The heartbreaking and heartwarming adventure of a thirteen year old boy through parallel worlds is magical and awe inspiring. I challenge anyone not to take Jack into their hearts and to fight with him through this amazing adventure.

I cried tears of joy and sadness reading this book and have re-read it time and time again. I can't recommend it highly enough and would suggest that anyone who has enjoyed the gunslinger series by Stephen King, cannot afford to deny themselves this epic tale.

5.0 out of 5 stars All time favourite book! 6 Mar 2011
By PennyW
Format:Paperback
I have read this about fifteen times and it is still as good each time. What you miss in terms of the surprise element is made up for by re-visiting the wonderful characters, good and bad. Each chapter ends at a point that makes you need to read on and the story is imaginative, scary, tender, funny and beautifully written.I have owned five or six copies of this book and have lent them out ,never got them back but love the idea that other people I have passed the book on to have enjoyed it as well and hopefully passed it on in their turn!

5.0 out of 5 stars Modern Genius 27 Dec 2003
Format:Paperback
Simply an incredible story, don't know how two authors ideas can be combined so seemingly effortlessly but it works. King fans will notice many links with his other books (characters and settings). Follow up 'Black House' is also amazing. I read both before beginning the Dark Tower series and the way all the worlds created intertwine is, at times, breath-taking.

5.0 out of 5 stars BRILLIANT ! BRILLIANT! BRILLIANT! 23 Sep 2006
By Lauran
Format:Paperback
My dictionary gives the definition of the above word as "shining, sparkling, splendid, very clever & distinguished" which sums up the book perfectly. I just loved it. I picked this up in my local library, having read some Stephen King a long time ago, I wasn't expecting too much, but I just couldn't put this down. I've been up till 2am every night reading it and now that I've finished the book, I have immediately started reading it again (which despite being an avid reader, I have never done before). Beautifully crafted, funny, terrifying and sad, to reach the end of the book feels like a bereavement - the characters are so real they seem to jump off the page at you. I want to go and live in the Territories NOW! This is the best escapism ever.

One boys mission to save his mother. It has parallels with Lord of the Rings. This would make a great film.
