A charming series of tales recounted by animals who join a journey to hear the Tales of Tales. Many of the tales are told in Tony MItton's easy and amusing rhymes and each chapter is short enough for a bedtime story. A great introduction to reading books in chapters and the outline pictures are fantastic. It felt like a classic to me - a sort of Just So stories for younger children

Just Fanstastic! 18 May 2004
By A Customer - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Hardcover
This is the first time I have ever reviewed a book here, certainly not the first I have purchased, especially not in childrens books. I have three kids all under 6years and we LOVE to read. When I saw there were no other reviews I had to write. We just finished this book tonight. We read each 'tale' periodically since we bought it. It was so much fun to read to my 3 and 6 year old girls. And the ending left us hanging but ready to use our imaginations!! I couldn't recommend it more. I am going to purchase some for every one I know with avid readers/storytellers.

An excellent folk story for read-aloud interest 12 Jun. 2004
By Midwest Book Review - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Hardcover
Peter Bailey provides the old-fashioned black and white illustrations to accompany this story of Monkey and friend Elephant who set out in the jungle to hear the Tale of Tales. The Tale of Tales is a 100+ page title which will prove an excellent folk story for read-aloud interest: some stories within are told in poetic couplets, others in Aesop-tyle prose: a fine variety which defies dullness.
Perfect Bedtime Stories Book 22 Aug. 2010
By A - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Hardcover
We actually checked this book out from our library, but it was such a great book it's worth leaving a review here. This book is written as a series of short stories all joined together by a single narrative thread. Each story is just perfect in length to be read as a short bedtime story. My kids are 3 & 7, and finding books that are still accessible to my 3yr old but not too boring for my 7yr old is a challenge. This book was able to capture and hold both of their imaginations with engaging story telling and simple but beautiful illustrations.
The stories themselves remind me of Aesop's Fables (which I would recommend also if you like this book), and each one contains a clever lesson if you look for it. These stories are a welcome break from the usual silly fluff of most children's books. This book is definitely a keeper.
PS: The ending may seem like a bit of a cliff-hanger, but my take was this: Just after reading the ending, close the book and read the title of the book again. And so the story to be told is in fact the one you just read! Makes a perfect circle of the story and is a fun surprise for the kids...

What a beautiful book! I love Tony Mitton's books and he came through once again. The story and the illustrations are gorgeous and fun at the same time. My 4-yr-old and 6-yr-old boys love this book. I am planning on buying more copies of it to give as gifts. Thanks for another wonderful book, Mr. Mitton!
