The Tale of Two Mice 10 Aug 2010
By S Riaz TOP 50 REVIEWER VINE™ VOICE
Format:Hardcover|Amazon Verified Purchase
Two mice live in a creepy old house. The problem is, they have no food, so they have to venture to the kitchen for supplies. The little mouse is nervous, but his older brother keeps telling him there is nothing to be afraid of in piles of fruit that look like faces, or vacuum cleaners that look like a monster. There are lots of flaps and detailed illustrations for children to look at and interact with. However, what we can see (and so can the little mouse) is the cat, which is what the little mouse is really frightened of. There's a lovely pop up, where the cat pounces, before the little mouse scurries back to the safety of his mousehole. This is a slightly scary book, so you might want to avoid it if you have a very nervous toddler. Most though, will enjoy the flaps and the wonderful illustrations. Ruth Brown also wrote "A dark dark tale" and this is very similar in style - so if you have a child that likes that book, they will almost certainly love this, which would make a lovely gift book.

A book full of surprises and delights! 22 Mar 2012
By Z Hayes - Published on Amazon.com
Even though my seven-year-old is now reading chapter books, I make it a point to check out a couple of picture books a week from our local library. She loves snuggling with me several nights a week and reading these picture books which have all sorts of fun themes and positive messages.

The Tale of Two Mice caught my attention at the library this morning - it is an oversized hardcover book with two raggedy looking mice on the cover. When I casually flipped through the book, I found that it had a couple of hidden surprises in the form of lift-the-flaps. However, these surprises were not too childish and I knew my first grader would delight in them.

She loves this book! We read it tonight and the story of two young mice, siblings Billy and Bo, is one of adventure. Billy and his older brother Bo have run out of food and venture out of their mouse hole one night, in search of food in a large manor house. Billy is a scaredy mouse and is afraid of sounds and strange sights, and this behavior greatly annoys his older brother. Little does Bo know that some of Billy's fears are not completely unfounded, and there could be something sinister stalking the brothers through the dark house.

The lift the flap feature is quite fun, and I was thrilled that my daughter has not outgrown the gleeful anticipation of lifting a flap to discover what awaits within:-) A delightful book full of unexpected surprises!
This is a wonderful book about Bo and Billy (and the kitty) that little hands are going to love to explore! "Eeeeeeeeek!" 28 Nov 2009

There was a huge old house that looked a bit like a castle. It was a dark and dreary looking place and a tad scary under the light of a full moon. Inside there were a couple of mice, two brothers, Bill and Bo, hiding out in their snug little home in a baseboard. It wouldn't be easy to go out because sitting on top of an old chair with some yucky horsehair sticking out of it was a long-haired gray cat. The two brothers "had nothing to eat or drink" so they had to go out. "But -- said Billy." Bo wasn't scared and off they went to the kitchen. They opened a cupboard in there and only found some mops. Little did they know that kitty was watching them all the time!

Billy and Bo went off to the dining room and looked behind a curtain. Finally they found "A feast!" There was a banquet waiting for them to dip into with everything from nuts to cheese. They loaded things into their cart and picked up some sticks in the living room. Billy was still worried about the kitty cat, who really was under the chair. Bo yelled at him, "Don't be such a BABY!" Billy was a bit scared of everything and it wasn't long before he thought there was something under a blanket. Whoa! There really was something under there and it just POPPED up out at him. "Eeeeeeeeek!"

This is a wonderful book about Bo and Billy (and the kitty) that little hands are going to love to explore! The book is a lot of fun with the little cat and mouse game that we can see going on. There are many flaps and one pop-up for children to enjoy. The pop-up kitty alone was well worth the price of the book. The story was charming and the complementary artwork was perfect. I'd only have one small recommendation and that would be to get some clear packing tape to reinforce the edges of the flaps because this book is going to be read time and time again! "Eeeeeeeeek!"
