Book Description

8 Aug 2006
Yoshitaka Amano has been praised around the world for his lush watercolors and evocative work dealing with myth and legend. In The Tale of Genji, Mr. Amano brings his considerable talent to retelling one of the most famous of Japanese myths. Written by Murasaki Shikibu shortly after 1000 AD and considered by most scholars to be the first novel ever written, The Tale of Genji is the story of the romantic adventures of Genji, the amazingly handsome prince and his many romantic conquests. Told through stunning paintings, Mr. Amano brings this classic story to life for a new generation.

4.0 out of 5 stars amazing colors 28 Jun 2013
By ersilia
Format:Hardcover|Verified Purchase
The contents of this book are amazing, the colors are very rich and I would never get tired of look at the pages again and again...
The only flaw, in my opinion, is the double cover who can easily get wrinkled when you handle it.
Anyway I'm fully satisfied with it and I recommend this to anyone who love Yoshitaka Amano's art and japanese classic stories.

4.0 out of 5 stars Not quite what I expected... 20 Jan 2010
By S. Crowther - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Hardcover|Verified Purchase
I thought that the actual story would be in there someplace and not just a small synopsis of each part in correlation to the picture. Still, if you like Genji or Amano, it is a good book to add to a collection.

5.0 out of 5 stars Nothing but beautiful. 12 Nov 2008
By Solo Artist - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Hardcover|Verified Purchase
This is an art book by amano, an acclaimed Japanese artist. He is here illustrating Murasaki Shikibu's novel, The Tale of Genji, thought to be the world's first novel. The illustrations are gorgeous, sometimes abstract, and very decorated. A must have for art lovers!

4.0 out of 5 stars Lush and ethereal 29 April 2012
By wiredweird - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Hardcover
This skips lightly through Lady Murasaki's massive classic, often said to be the first novel in the modern sense. Barely even a summary, instead, this picks a few of the tale's especially evocative moments. Then, with an artist's alchemy, Amano transforms them into densely detailed, sensual, flowing images in ink and watercolor.

It's true in this case: "Writing about art is like dancing about architecture." The complexity of these images, both visual and cultural, defies easy description. You'll just have to see for yourself - and I'm sure you'll be glad you did.

5.0 out of 5 stars Dark and beautiful 21 Feb 2013
By KB - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Hardcover|Verified Purchase
I bought this book along with Yoshitaka Amano's Fairies book as a gift. I love both of them. The images in this book are darker than the images in the Fairies book, but just as beautiful. I have been trying to decide which book I like better, but it is impossible. I am glad and I went ahead and purchased both.

By Kris Rose - Published on Amazon.com

This book was much more than I expected! I couldn't be happier with it. The images in this book are beautiful & heartwarming. I love the story & history that was also included. I am using this book in my wedding & I again couldn't be more happy or surprised as to how beautiful it is.
